City of Denison
About Us
The City of Denison employs cutting-edge technology and equipment to consistently deliver premium quality water. Using conventional treatment methods, we produce between four and ten million gallons of water daily for our customers. Our process follows four distinct steps mandated by TCEQ and USEPA to ensure water safety.
Our treatment process includes:
- Coagulation: Chemical and mechanical alteration of raw water to remove larger solids
- Sedimentation: Allowing time for smaller particles to settle before filtration
- Filtration: Removing microscopic contaminants
- Disinfection: Treatment with chloramine compounds before distribution
Water undergoes continuous testing throughout treatment to verify safety before leaving the plant. The City of Denison tests 25 distribution sites monthly, reporting results to regulatory authorities. All treatment staff are TCEQ-certified through rigorous training and testing.
Additional Water Characteristics: Various natural elements like calcium, sodium, and iron may affect taste, color, and odor. These secondary constituents are regulated by Texas rather than EPA and don't pose health concerns, though they can affect water appearance and taste.
Unregulated Contaminant Monitoring: We participate in EPA's program to identify unregulated contaminants that may require future regulation. Details of any detected unregulated contaminants appear in relevant report tables.
Some individuals may be more vulnerable to contaminants in tap water than the general population. Those with compromised immune systems—including cancer patients undergoing chemotherapy, organ transplant recipients, those with HIV/AIDS, elderly persons, and infants—should seek medical advice about their drinking water. EPA/CDC guidelines on reducing infection risk are available through the Safe Drinking Water Hotline (1-800-426-4791).
Water Quality Assurance: Our municipal water meets or exceeds all EPA requirements. This report summarizes water quality data from the latest required tests.
Water Sources: Municipal water (including bottled water) comes from rivers, lakes, streams, ponds, reservoirs, springs, and wells. Water naturally dissolves minerals and can pick up substances from animal or human activity. Untreated water may contain microbes, inorganic contaminants, pesticides, herbicides, organic chemicals, and radioactive substances.
Our Water Supply: Most of our water comes from city-owned Lake Randell, southwest of Denison between US 75 and Lake Texoma. This supply is supplemented by water transferred from Lake Texoma. Customers near North Texas Regional Airport receive a blend of surface water and groundwater from Trinity/Paluxy aquifer wells.
TCEQ's source water assessment indicates some susceptibility to certain contaminants. Any detections will appear in this report. For more information on source water testing and protection, please contact us.
Water Quality Standards: When water meets federal standards, there may be no health benefits to using bottled water or filtration devices. All water contains at least small amounts of some contaminants, which doesn't necessarily indicate a health risk. For more information about contaminants and potential health effects, call the EPA's Safe Drinking Water Hotline (1-800-426-4791).
Water Loss Audit: In our audit submitted to the Texas Water Development Board for January-December 2017, our system lost approximately 149,163,214 gallons of water. Questions about water loss can be directed to 903-464-4480.

City of Denison Municipal Water Company and EPACity of Denison Municipal Water Report Info
Founded in 1872, the City of Denison was named after Missouri-Kansas-Texas Railroad (MKT) Vice-President George Denison. The railroad, commonly known as Katy Railroad, has been integral to the city's development and is now part of Union Pacific.
During the 1940s, Denison's economy was significantly boosted by the establishment of Perrin Air Force Base, which began as an Army Air Field. Today, this former base operates as North Texas Regional Airport under Grayson County's management, featuring 9,000-foot and 8,000-foot runways capable of accommodating aircraft of all sizes.
Historic Downtown
Denison's rich history is preserved through dedicated conservation efforts. In 1988, Denison initiated a Main Street Program and received official designation as a Texas Main Street City by the Texas Historical Commission in 1989. The 30-square downtown area is listed on the National Register of Historic Places, with many homes maintaining their original character and design. Historic walking and driving tours guide visitors through neighborhoods and the historic downtown arts district. In 2001, the Texas Commission on the Arts recognized Denison as one of the first arts and culture districts.
Notable Residents
Denison has produced remarkable individuals, including President Dwight David Eisenhower, who was born in a simple frame house near the Katy Railroad where his father worked cleaning steam engines. The Eisenhower Birthplace State Historic Site commemorates the Texas-born president who served as the supreme commander of allied forces in Europe during World War II. Chesley "Sully" Sullenburger, who famously landed US Airways Flight 1549 on the Hudson River in January 2009, was also raised in Denison.
Viticulture Heritage
Thomas V. Munson, a renowned viticulturalist from Denison, became a leading expert in Native American grape species. His research proved crucial in saving the European grape and wine industry from catastrophe in the late 19th century. Today, Grayson County College maintains the T.V. Munson Viticulture and Enology Center next to a vineyard, and this viticultural connection led to Denison's Sister City relationship with Cognac, France.
