About Us
All water sources, including bottled options, naturally contain trace amounts of various contaminants. While their presence doesn't necessarily indicate a health risk, understanding what's in your water is important. For detailed information about contaminants and potential health effects, contact the Environmental Protection Agency's Safe Drinking Water Hotline at 800-426-4791.
Certain populations face higher vulnerability to specific water contaminants like Cryptosporidium. This includes infants, elderly individuals, and those with compromised immune systems such as cancer patients undergoing chemotherapy, organ transplant recipients, people on steroid treatments, and individuals with HIV/AIDS. If you fall into these categories, consult your healthcare provider about your water consumption.
The Lakeway Municipal Utility District's board and staff are committed to providing safe, high-quality water to our community. This commitment is personal—we live and work here too, drinking the same water as our neighbors and families. The 1996 Safe Drinking Water Act Amendments require us to share this information based on tests conducted in 2017.
The District meets all federal and state water quality requirements, with Texas Commission on Environmental Quality confirmation of our water's safety. Since our water meets federal standards, there's likely no health advantage to purchasing bottled water or installing filtration devices.
Lakeway MUD operates as a political subdivision of Texas, sourcing our water from Lake Travis. As our comprehensive testing shows, we maintained full compliance with State and EPA regulations throughout the reporting period and continue to do so today.

Lakeway MUD Drinking Water Company and EPALakeway MUD Municipal Water Report Information
The nonprofit Lakeway MUD, established in 1972, provides water, wastewater, and reuse services to most homes and businesses within Lakeway city limits and portions of the Village of the Hills. Currently serving over 4,000 water customers and approximately 3,000 wastewater customers, Lakeway MUD operates as a comprehensive service provider.
Unlike typical flatland utilities with costs embedded in city fees, Lakeway MUD faces unique challenges. We can't simply purchase wholesale water from a nearby city – we're a full-service provider paying LCRA for raw lake water. To ensure adequate supply, we pay additional fees to reserve water we don't immediately use.
Our operational requirements include lifting water 300+ feet from Lake Travis, treating it to safety standards, and delivering it across Lakeway's hilly terrain. We then collect and treat wastewater to stringent requirements. Due to Highland Lakes regulations, we cannot discharge recycled water into Lake Travis, necessitating evaporation through reuse holding ponds, cedar tract irrigation areas, and landscape irrigation systems.
Despite these geographic and regulatory challenges, Lakeway MUD maintains among the lowest water rates in the region. In 2009, the Board adopted a conservation-focused five-tier rate structure ranging from $2.50 to $5.00, replacing the previous two-tier system. The 2011 rates include financing for infrastructure improvements including a new water tank.
