Understanding Your Water Sources

Water in our region comes from various sources including rivers, lakes, reservoirs, springs, and wells. As water travels over land or underground, it naturally dissolves minerals and can pick up substances from animal presence or human activity.

Potential Contaminants in Source Water:

  • Microbial contaminants (viruses, bacteria) from sewage treatment plants, septic systems, agricultural operations, and wildlife
  • Inorganic contaminants (salts, metals) that occur naturally or result from urban runoff, industrial discharges, oil/gas production, or farming
  • Pesticides and herbicides from agriculture, urban stormwater runoff, and residential usage
  • Organic chemical contaminants, including synthetic and volatile organics from industrial processes, petroleum production, gas stations, and septic systems
  • Radioactive contaminants that may occur naturally or result from oil/gas production and mining

Ensuring Water Safety

The EPA establishes regulations limiting contaminant levels in public water systems, while FDA regulations set similar standards for bottled water. Some substances may affect taste, odor, or color without posing health risks. For specific concerns about water quality, please contact our office.

Our Water Supply

CADDO BASIN SUD purchases water from NORTH TEXAS MWD WYLIE WTP, which sources surface water from Lake Lavon Reservoir in Collin County. We also purchase from CITY OF FARMERSVILLE, which obtains water from the same North Texas MWD source.

Water Assessment and Vulnerability

TCEQ has completed source water assessments indicating some sources may be susceptible to certain contaminants. Our sampling requirements are based on this susceptibility and previous data. For more information about testing and quality efforts, contact Leahmon Bryant, General Manager at (903) 527-3504.

Important Health Information

Certain populations may be more vulnerable to contaminants like Cryptosporidium, including infants, elderly, and immunocompromised individuals. These groups should seek advice from healthcare providers about drinking water safety.

Lead in Water

Elevated lead levels can cause serious health problems, especially for pregnant women and young children. Lead primarily enters water through service line materials and home plumbing components. After water sits for several hours, flushing your tap for 30 seconds to 2 minutes before using water for drinking or cooking can minimize potential exposure. For concerns, consider having your water tested. More information is available at http://www.epa.gov/safewater/lead.

Water Distribution Statistics

In 2017, Caddo Basin SUD distributed 336,904,000 gallons of water to customers, with an estimated loss of 47,988,369 gallons. For questions about water loss, please call (903) 527-3504.
