Colorado Water Utility Companies

This report aims to inform our customers about the quality of their water supply and water program. Our primary goal is to provide a reliable and safe water supply. We want residents to understand their water's source, composition, and how it compares to federal water quality standards. The City of Black Hawk's municipal water meets and exceeds these strict guidelines while being regulated by both Colorado state authorities and the EPA.

Important Health Information
All tap water, including bottled varieties, may contain small amounts of some contaminants. Their presence doesn't necessarily indicate a health risk. For more information about contaminants and potential health effects, contact the EPA's Safe Drinking Water Hotline (1-800-426-4791).

Certain populations may be more vulnerable to water contaminants than others. People with compromised immune systems—such as cancer patients undergoing chemotherapy, organ transplant recipients, HIV/AIDS patients, the elderly, and infants—may face higher infection risks. These individuals should consult with healthcare providers about their drinking water options.

Lead Awareness
Elevated lead levels can cause serious health issues, particularly for pregnant women and young children. Lead concentration may vary between homes depending on plumbing materials. If concerned about lead, consider having your water tested. After water sits for several hours, minimize potential exposure by running your tap for 30 seconds to 2 minutes before using water for drinking or cooking. More information is available from the Safe Drinking Water Hotline or at http://www.epa.gov/safewater/lead.

EPA Monitoring Program
Black Hawk participated in the EPA's Unregulated Contaminant Monitoring Rule (UCMR3). Approximately 6,500 utilities nationwide monitor unregulated contaminants to help the EPA determine their prevalence and whether regulation is needed for public health protection. The EPA currently regulates 90 water contaminants. The 1996 Safe Drinking Water Act amendments require the EPA to issue a new list of up to 30 unregulated contaminants for monitoring every five years.

As part of UCMR3, the City collected quarterly water samples from treatment plants and the distribution system. Five of 21 tested contaminants were detected at levels below reference thresholds. Perfluorinated chemicals, synthetic organics, and volatile organics were not detected. For more information about all UCMR3 contaminants, visit http://www.drinktap.org/home/water-information/water-quality/ucmr3.

Historic Legacy
Since the landmark gold discovery of 1859, Black Hawk has built a legacy of progressive development and economic opportunity. The city has weathered the boom-bust cycles of gold strikes, coal mining, and stamp mills. Both during the initial gold rush and after the 1990 passage of Colorado's limited stakes gaming legislation, Black Hawk has demonstrated a resilient frontier spirit that capitalizes on opportunities for economic growth.

In recent decades, nearly $900 million has been invested in land development, casinos, and related infrastructure. Today, this picturesque mountain community generates over 85% of Colorado's gaming revenue and contributes $90.9 million annually in taxes supporting tourism, historical preservation, and higher education throughout Colorado.

Historical Milestones:

  • 1859: John H. Gregory discovered deposit gold in what was then Kansas Territory. "Gregory's Gulch," between Black Hawk and Central City, attracted thousands of prospectors.
  • 1864: Black Hawk became one of Colorado's first incorporated cities, evolving from "Mountain City" into the region's primary gold processing center.
  • 1872: Railroad connection to Denver established to transport refined gold.
  • 1991: After years of economic decline, limited stakes gaming was approved, launching a revival that would eventually generate $20,000 in daily revenue for the city.
