About Us
General Information About Your Water
Most tap water, including bottled varieties, typically contains at least trace amounts of various contaminants. The presence of these substances doesn't necessarily indicate a health risk. For comprehensive information about contaminants and potential health effects, you can contact the Environmental Protection Agency's Safe Drinking Water Hotline at 1-800-426-4791 or visit http://water.epa.gov/drink/contaminants.
Vulnerable Populations
Certain groups may be more vulnerable to water contaminants than the general public. People with compromised immune systems, including cancer patients undergoing chemotherapy, organ transplant recipients, HIV/AIDS patients, elderly individuals, and infants face higher infection risks. These individuals should consult healthcare providers about their drinking water options.
Source Water Information
Water sources (both tap and bottled) include rivers, lakes, streams, ponds, reservoirs, springs, and wells. As water travels over land or underground, it dissolves naturally occurring minerals, sometimes including radioactive materials, and can pick up substances from animal or human activity.
Potential contaminants in source water include:
- Microbial contaminants: viruses and bacteria from sewage treatment facilities, septic systems, agricultural operations, and wildlife
- Inorganic contaminants: salts and metals occurring naturally or resulting from urban runoff, wastewater discharge, oil/gas production, mining, or farming
- Pesticides and herbicides: from various sources including agriculture, urban stormwater runoff, and residential use
- Radioactive contaminants: naturally occurring or resulting from oil/gas production and mining
- Organic chemical contaminants: byproducts of industrial processes, petroleum production, gas stations, urban runoff, and septic systems
Lead in Drinking Water
Elevated lead levels can cause serious health complications, particularly for pregnant women and young children. Lead in your home's water may result from plumbing materials. If concerned, you can minimize potential exposure by running your tap for 30 seconds to 2 minutes before using water for drinking or cooking after periods of non-use. For testing information and minimizing exposure methods, contact the Safe Drinking Water Hotline at 1-800-426-4791 or visit http://www.epa.gov/safewater/lead.
Source Water Assessment
The Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment has provided a Source Water Assessment Report for our water supply. For information or to obtain a copy, visit www.colorado.gov/cdphe/ccr or search table using 154524, MT WERNER WD, or contact FRANK ALONE at 970-879-2424.
Recent Monitoring Violation
Our water system recently violated a monitoring requirement. While not an emergency, we're required to inform customers. During August 2017, we didn't complete all testing for HAA5 due to laboratory equipment malfunction. We've since obtained the required samples and continue meeting the sampling schedule. Test results show we're meeting water standards.

Mt Werner WD Drinking Water Company and EPAMt Werner WD Municipal Water Report Information
The Mount Werner Water District is dedicated to delivering high-quality, cost-effective water and wastewater services that comply with all Federal and State regulations while protecting public health, safeguarding the environment, and ensuring maximum customer satisfaction. We foster a workplace environment where every employee is recognized as an essential part of our organization, encouraging teamwork and individual contribution.
Our district encompasses the southern portion of Steamboat Springs, generally including the resort or mountain area. Our philosophy centers on providing excellent, customer-friendly services at the lowest possible cost, resulting in residential water and sewer rates that rank among Colorado's lowest.
Originally, the District developed separately from the City of Steamboat Springs. As both entities grew, their water and sanitation facilities needed integration. In 1980, the District participated in developing a regional wastewater treatment facility operated by the City but serving both municipalities. The Fish Creek Filtration Plant became a joint operation in 1983 when state health officials required the City to add filtration to their system. Today, various facilities are shared, including Fish Creek Reservoir, which supplies raw water to both the City and District.
