About Us
We are pleased to present our annual water quality report to keep Bowie residents informed about their municipal water services. This report covers the previous calendar year's water quality assessment and is available by July 1 annually.
This information applies specifically to areas served by the City of Bowie Water Plant and should not be confused with regions served by the Washington Suburban Sanitary Commission.
Municipal water sources include rivers, lakes, streams, ponds, reservoirs, springs, and wells. As water travels across land or underground, it dissolves naturally-occurring minerals and, in some instances, radioactive materials, and may pick up substances from animal or human activities.
Potential contaminants in source water include:
- Microbial contaminants (viruses, bacteria) from sewage plants, septic systems, agricultural operations, and wildlife
- Inorganic contaminants (salts, metals) from urban runoff, industrial waste, oil/gas production, mining, or farming
- Pesticides and herbicides from agriculture, urban runoff, and residential usage
- Organic chemicals from industrial processes, petroleum production, gas stations, and septic systems
- Radioactive materials occurring naturally or resulting from energy production activities
The City's water comes from six groundwater wells drawing from three confined aquifers: Well #1 (Magothy formation), Wells #2R, #3, #6 (Patapsco formation), and Wells #4R and #5 (Patuxent formation). These aquifers range from approximately 200 feet to 1,160 feet deep.
To safeguard this resource, we've developed a comprehensive Wellhead Protection Plan identifying potential contamination sources. This report includes information on delineated protection zones and aquifer recharge areas, and is available at the Bowie Branch Library.
The confined aquifers utilized by Bowie provide excellent natural protection from surface contaminants, but we continuously monitor our water supply to maintain high quality standards. The Maryland Department of Environment has completed a Source Water Assessment for Bowie, with the summary included in this report. The complete assessment is available at the Bowie Branch Library and on the city website.
