About Us
Orange County's water supply comes from two main sources: groundwater managed by the Orange County Water District (OCWD) and imported water from Northern California and the Colorado River through the Municipal Water District of Orange County (MWDOC) via Metropolitan Water District of Southern California (MWDSC).
The groundwater basin spans 350 square miles beneath north and central Orange County, stretching from Irvine to Los Angeles County and from Yorba Linda to the Pacific Ocean. More than 20 cities and water districts draw from this essential basin to serve residential and commercial customers.
As water demand increases throughout California, Orange County must become more efficient with its valuable resources. OCWD and MWDOC collaborate to develop innovative water management programs, including:
- Water reuse and recycling initiatives
- Wetlands development projects
- Recharge facility construction
- Ocean and brackish water desalination
- Surface storage improvements
- Water conservation programs
These efforts strengthen county-wide water reliability and quality. A sustainable water future for Orange County depends on both developing new sources and protecting existing supplies.
Understanding Municipal Water Contaminants
Municipal water comes from rivers, lakes, streams, ponds, reservoirs, springs, and wells. As water moves across land or through soil, it dissolves naturally-occurring minerals and can pick up substances from human and animal activities. Potential contaminants include:

City of Buena Park Drinking Water Company and EPACity of Buena Park Municipal Water Report Information
Buena Park's history begins in 1783 when California belonged to Spain. Governor Pedro Fages received royal permission to grant land parcels, including one to Manuel Nieto, a former guard from the Portola Expedition. This expansive property stretched from the San Gabriel River to the Santa Ana River, and from the ocean to the road from San Gabriel Mission.
The historic Whitaker-Jaynes Estate, located in the City's Historic District across from City Hall, remains available for public tours. In 1834, Manuel Nieto's property was divided into five ranchos, with Rancho Los Coyotes encompassing 48,806 acres including present-day Buena Park.
Rancho Los Coyotes holds significant historical importance, as Commodore Robert S. Stockton and his American forces camped there in January 1847 before the Battle of San Gabriel River. This decisive battle helped determine the outcome of the Mexican-American War (1846-48). A historical marker near the Los Coyotes Country Club commemorates Stockton's encampment site.
In 1885, Chicago merchant James A. Whitaker purchased 690 acres of Stearns Rancho, formerly part of Rancho Los Coyotes. While Whitaker initially planned a cattle ranch, Santa Fe Railway officials convinced him to establish a town instead. Whitaker filed township papers in 1887 in Los Angeles County (before Orange County's formation) to create Buena Park, though the city wasn't officially incorporated until 1953.
Buena Park first flourished as a dairy center with both Santa Fe and Southern Pacific railways building warehouses there. The Lily Creamery, established in 1889, became the city's first major industry outside of a few wineries.
Today, Buena Park is renowned as home to the popular E-Zone (Entertainment Zone). Located along Beach Boulevard south of the 91 Freeway, the E-Zone features attractions including Knott's Berry Farm, Medieval Times Dinner and Tournament, Knott's Soak City U.S.A., and Pirate's Dinner Adventure.
