Each year, the City of Clinton must publish a Municipal Water Quality Report as required by the ENVIRONMENTAL PROTECTION AGENCY. These reports are available below for easy access, following federal regulations.

Canton residents benefit from abundant water supplies drawn from two high-quality groundwater sources: the Sparta and Cockfield aquifers. Our system extracts water through ten deep wells - six tapping into the Sparta aquifer and four from the Cockfield source. The city maintains five elevated storage tanks with a combined capacity of 2.9 million gallons. In 2017, our daily average consumption reached 3.5 million gallons flowing through approximately 175 miles of water mains.

Water Safety Information: We're pleased to present this Annual Water Quality Report (Consumer Confidence Report) as required by the Safe Drinking Water Act. This report provides information about your water source, its contents, and how it compares to regulatory standards. Last year, we tested for over 70 potential contaminants, detecting only 6, with just one exceeding EPA limits (see Violations section for details).

Special Health Considerations: Some individuals may be more vulnerable to water contaminants than the general population. Those with compromised immune systems - including cancer patients undergoing chemotherapy, organ transplant recipients, HIV/AIDS patients, elderly individuals, and infants - should seek advice from healthcare providers about their drinking water. Guidelines for reducing infection risks from Cryptosporidium and other microbial contaminants are available through the Safe Water Drinking Hotline (800-426-4791).

Source Water Assessment: The Mississippi Department of Environmental Quality (MSDEQ) source water assessment report is available for review upon request at the City of Clinton Public Works Department. Please contact Robbie Price at (601)924-2239 or rprice@clintonms.org to schedule an appointment. A current photo ID is required for review.

Understanding Water Contaminants

Municipal water, including bottled varieties, may contain small amounts of certain contaminants. Their presence doesn't necessarily indicate a health risk. For detailed information about contaminants and potential health effects, contact the EPA's Safe Drinking Water Hotline (800-426-4791).

Water sources (both tap and bottled) include rivers, lakes, streams, ponds, reservoirs, springs, and wells. As water travels over land or underground, it dissolves naturally occurring minerals and sometimes radioactive materials, and can pick up substances from animal or human activity:

  • Microbial contaminants from sewage plants, septic systems, agricultural operations, and wildlife
  • Inorganic contaminants like salts and metals (natural or from urban runoff, industrial discharges, oil/gas production, mining)
  • Pesticides and herbicides from agriculture, urban runoff, and residential uses
  • Organic chemical contaminants from industrial processes, petroleum production, gas stations, and septic systems
  • Radioactive contaminants that may occur naturally or result from oil/gas production and mining

The EPA regulates contaminant levels in public water systems, while FDA regulations establish limits for bottled water, both designed to provide the same public health protection.
