About Us
The Carlsbad Municipal Water District currently imports 100% of its tap water supply. Our water begins hundreds of miles away as snowmelt and rainfall flowing into rivers. The water comes primarily from two sources:
- The Colorado River, transported via the Colorado River Aqueduct
- Northern California water, delivered through the California Aqueduct (State Water Project)
These water sources undergo thorough treatment by the Metropolitan Water District of Southern California at its Lake Skinner Treatment Plant in Riverside County and by the San Diego County Water Authority. After treatment, the water travels through San Diego County Water Authority pipelines before being purchased and distributed by the Carlsbad Municipal Water District.
The Claude "Bud" Lewis Carlsbad Desalination Plant, operated by Poseidon Water, supplies additional water to the San Diego County Water Authority, which blends it with the region's imported water before distribution throughout San Diego County.
We encourage residents to make water conservation a lifestyle. For conservation tips and recommended measures, please visit www.carlsbadca.gov/water.
Municipal water sources (both tap and bottled) include oceans, rivers, lakes, streams, reservoirs, springs and wells. As water travels over land or underground, it dissolves natural minerals and can pick up substances from animal presence or human activity. All tap water may contain small amounts of some contaminants, which doesn't necessarily indicate a health risk. For more information about contaminants and potential health effects, call the U.S. EPA's Safe Drinking Water Hotline at 800-426-4791.
Source water may contain:
- Microbial contaminants such as viruses and bacteria from sewage treatment plants, septic systems, agricultural operations, and wildlife
- Inorganic contaminants including salts and metals that may be naturally occurring or result from urban runoff, wastewater discharges, oil/gas production, mining or farming
