Rancho California Water District
About Us
RCWD delivers water and wastewater services to meet the diverse needs of residents and businesses in the Temecula and Murrieta Valleys. The district benefits from three local water sources:
First, winter surface runoff into Vail Lake is captured and later released to replenish local underground aquifers. Second, native groundwater is pumped from large subterranean basins beneath portions of the District. Third, the District purchases untreated imported water for additional groundwater recharge.
Recycled water (highly treated, filtered, and disinfected wastewater) serves some landscapes, parks, and golf courses within the District. Beyond local sources, RCWD purchases imported water from the Metropolitan Water District of Southern California (MWD), which comes primarily from the Colorado River and the Sacramento San Joaquin Bay-Delta.
A source water assessment completed in December 2002 found groundwater sources most vulnerable to impacts from crop irrigation, dry cleaners, electrical production, grazing, gas stations, mining operations, photo processing, solid waste systems, and sewer collection systems. The assessment summary is available upon request. MWD's assessment of Colorado River and State Water Project supplies indicates vulnerability to recreation, urban/stormwater runoff, increasing urbanization, wildlife, agriculture, and wastewater. For a copy of MWD's assessment, contact them at (800) 225-5693.
