About Us
Orange County's water supply combines groundwater managed by OCWD with imported water from Northern California and the Colorado River through MWDOC and MWDSC. The groundwater comes from a natural underground aquifer replenished by the Santa Ana River, local rainfall, and imported water sources. This basin spans 350 square miles beneath north and central Orange County, from Irvine to the Los Angeles County border and from Yorba Linda to the Pacific Ocean.
While Orange County has historically enjoyed abundant high-quality water, increasing statewide demand requires greater conservation and efficiency. OCWD and MWDOC collaborate on innovative water management programs including recycling, wetlands development, recharge facility construction, desalination, and conservation initiatives to enhance water reliability and quality.
Tap water sources (both municipal and bottled) include rivers, lakes, streams, ponds, reservoirs, springs, and wells. As water travels over land or through the ground, it dissolves natural minerals and can pick up substances from human and animal activities.
Potential contaminants include:
- Microbial contaminants from sewage treatment, septic systems, livestock, and wildlife
- Inorganic contaminants including naturally occurring salts and metals or from urban runoff, industrial discharges, oil/gas production
- Pesticides and herbicides from agriculture, urban runoff, and residential uses
- Organic chemical contaminants from industrial processes, petroleum production, gas stations, and septic systems
- Radioactive contaminants from natural sources or mining and oil/gas production
Federal and state regulations limit contaminant levels in public water systems. Even bottled water must meet similar safety standards. While water may contain small amounts of some contaminants, their presence doesn't necessarily indicate a health risk.
Regarding Lead in Tap Water: Elevated lead levels can cause serious health problems, especially for pregnant women and young children. Lead primarily comes from materials in service lines and home plumbing. The City provides high-quality water but cannot control plumbing component materials. If water has been sitting for several hours, minimize lead exposure by flushing your tap for 30 seconds to 2 minutes before using water for drinking or cooking.
