Corona's Water Sources and Treatment

In 2017, Corona residents and businesses consumed approximately 10.2 billion gallons of water. Corona's water supply comes from diverse sources:

  • 40.4% from groundwater wells owned and operated by the City
  • 51.3% from the Colorado River via Lake Mathews
  • 6.2% from the State Water Project's California Aqueduct
  • 2.1% purchased from Western Municipal Water District's Arlington Desalter facility

The surface water from the Colorado River undergoes comprehensive treatment at Corona's two facilities: Lester and Sierra Del Oro. These plants use coagulants to bind small particles together, creating larger particles that are removed through media filtration. Following filtration, sodium hypochlorite disinfects the water by eliminating harmful organisms. Laboratory testing confirmed 100% of 2017 samples were free of harmful microorganisms.

Most groundwater pumped in Corona passes through the state-of-the-art Temescal Desalter reverse osmosis membrane treatment facility. This advanced system removes nitrates, per-fluorinated compounds, 1,2,3-Trichloropropane (1,2,3-TCP), perchlorates, and various suspended and dissolved solids.

The Department of Water and Power adds ammonium hydroxide to the disinfected water, which combines with sodium hypochlorite to form chloramines. This compound serves as a longer-lasting disinfectant in the distribution system while minimizing the formation of potentially harmful disinfection byproducts that can occur when chlorine reacts with naturally occurring organic materials.
