California Water Utility Companies

Last year, the Grover Beach Public Works Department conducted over 1,600 tests for more than 80 water contaminants. Only 41 contaminants were detected, with trace amounts of nitrate found in one well at levels higher than standards permit.

Water from this well is mixed with other sources to ensure our supply meets State and Federal nitrate requirements (45 ppm MCL). Grover Beach and neighboring cities receiving water from Lopez Lake use chloramines for disinfection – a state and federally-approved combination of chlorine and ammonia that reduces disinfection by-product formation while improving taste compared to chlorine alone.

If you use kidney dialysis equipment or maintain aquariums, please note that chloramine requires different removal treatments than chlorine. Contact your doctor, veterinarian, or the Public Works Department at (805) 473-4530 for guidance.

To reduce water corrosivity, we add sodium hydroxide and orthophosphate before distribution. Our most recent sampling of 30 residences in August 2015 showed all copper and lead levels were below required limits.

As of April 1, 2016, all water systems must comply with both state Total Coliform Rule and federal Revised Total Coliform Rule. These regulations protect public health by ensuring the integrity of the water distribution system through monitoring for microbial contaminants like total coliform and E. coli bacteria.

Grover Beach Water Department Municipal Water Report Information

The EPA requires all municipal water suppliers to test for potential contaminants and provide reports to the public. These reports include information about source water, detected contaminants, compliance with regulations, and potential health effects.

Typical water sources include rivers, lakes, streams, ponds, reservoirs, springs, and wells. As water travels over land or underground, it dissolves naturally-occurring minerals and can pick up substances from animal presence or human activity.
