About Clovis: Situated in the northeast section of the Fresno-Clovis Metropolitan Area, Clovis is nestled within the agriculturally rich San Joaquin Valley. Since its incorporation in 1912, Clovis has maintained its identity as the "Gateway to the Sierra." The city focuses on sustainable growth while preserving its distinctive western heritage. Clovis has experienced significant expansion, with its population more than doubling since 1985 to approximately 114,000 residents, covering over 23 square miles.
Historical Background: The city was named after pioneer Clovis M. Cole, who dedicated most of his life to the region. He was known for cultivating vast wheat fields throughout Fresno County. The first exploration of the area is attributed to Padre Martini, who surveyed the region in 1806 while searching for mission sites. Following missionaries and trappers, gold miners arrived, displacing many Native American tribes that had settled in the foothills and near waterways.
Community Development: Marcus Pollasky played a key role in establishing the city by organizing construction of a railroad through the agricultural and mining territories and into the Sierra's timber-rich forests. The city gradually developed around the San Joaquin Division of the Southern Pacific Railroad, which was instrumental in Clovis's founding and growth. Additional factors contributing to the city's establishment in 1891 included the completion of the 42-mile Shaver log flume, the 40-acre Clovis mill and finishing plant, expanded grain production, and livestock farming.
Modern Clovis: Today, Clovis continues to evolve to meet the needs of current and future residents. The city's economic foundation includes retail, services, and light manufacturing.
