California Water Utility Companies

Mountain View provides over 8 million gallons of water daily through nearly 18,000 connections via an extensive network of reservoirs, pumps, wells, and 177 kilometers of pipeline. The city strategically sources water from multiple supplies to ensure reliability during maintenance periods, droughts, and emergencies.

The city's water comes from three primary sources:

  • San Francisco Public Utilities Commission: Approximately 88% of Mountain View's water is purchased from the SFPUC's Hetch Hetchy system. This water primarily originates as Sierra Nevada snowmelt flowing into the Tuolumne River and stored in Yosemite National Park's Hetch Hetchy Reservoir. Additional SFPUC sources include rainfall collected from watersheds in Alameda, San Mateo, and Santa Clara counties.
  • Santa Clara Valley Water District: About 10% of the city's potable supply comes from SCVWD, with roughly half imported from the Sacramento-San Joaquin Delta. SCVWD also utilizes local groundwater and surface water stored in regional reservoirs. For operational flexibility, SFPUC water sometimes supplements areas typically served by SCVWD.
  • City Wells: The remaining 2% of Mountain View's water supply comes from city-owned groundwater wells. This water is pumped from deep aquifers and blended with SFPUC water before distribution. These wells also serve as critical emergency backups.

The city maintains distinct distribution zones to efficiently manage these various water sources throughout Mountain View.
