Our annual Hetch Hetchy Watershed Sanitary Survey evaluates potential contamination issues, water quality metrics, and watershed management activities conducted with our partner agencies including the National Park Service and US Forest Service.

We conduct additional 5-year sanitary surveys for local watersheds and approved standby water sources in the Earlier Intake Watershed, including Cherry Creek and Lake Eleanor. Our most recent surveys completed in 2011 (covering 2006-2010) identified wildlife, livestock, and human activities as potential contamination sources. These reports are available for public review at the CDPH San Francisco District office at (510) 620-3474.

Water Quality Monitoring: Our Water Quality Division (WQD) regularly collects and analyzes samples from reservoirs and designated testing points throughout the system. In 2013, our staff performed over 102,650 municipal water tests in transmission and distribution systems, supplementing the extensive treatment process monitoring by certified operators and online instruments.

Understanding Contaminants: As water flows across land or through soil, it dissolves naturally occurring minerals and sometimes radioactive materials, and may pick up substances from animal presence or human activity. All municipal water, including bottled water, reasonably contains at least small amounts of some contaminants. The presence of these substances doesn't necessarily indicate a health risk.

Emerging Contaminant Monitoring: We proactively address contaminants of emerging concern (CECs) through participation in national studies and independent monitoring of our source waters. Our approach helps prioritize resources and enhance public engagement on CEC issues, with evaluations conducted every three years and reviewed by the San Francisco Department of Public Health, SFPUC Citizens' Advisory Committee, and the Commission.
