Health Advisory: Important Information About Your Water

Arsenic: While Watsonville's municipal water meets federal and state standards for arsenic, it contains low levels of this naturally occurring mineral. Current regulations balance health concerns against treatment costs. The USEPA continues researching health impacts of low-level arsenic exposure, which is known to cause cancer at high concentrations and has been linked to skin damage and circulatory issues.

Lead: Elevated lead levels can pose serious health risks, particularly for pregnant women and young children. Lead primarily enters water through service lines and household plumbing materials. Though the City of Watsonville provides quality water, it cannot control materials used in residential plumbing systems. You can minimize lead exposure by running your tap for 30 seconds to 2 minutes after water has been sitting for several hours. If concerned about lead, consider having your water tested. More information is available through the Safe Drinking Water Hotline or at http://www.epa.gov/safewater/lead.
