About Us
Water sources include rivers, lakes, streams, ponds, reservoirs, springs, and wells. As water travels over land or through the ground, it dissolves natural minerals and, in some cases, radioactive material, and can pick up substances from animal presence or human activity.
To ensure tap water safety, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and State Water Resources Control Board establish regulations limiting contaminant levels in public water systems. FDA regulations and California law similarly restrict contaminants in bottled water to protect public health.
All water, including bottled water, contains some contaminants. Their presence doesn't necessarily indicate a health risk. Potential contaminants include:
- Microbial Contaminants: Viruses and bacteria from sewage treatment plants, septic systems, agricultural operations, and wildlife
- Inorganic Contaminants: Salts and metals occurring naturally or resulting from urban stormwater runoff, industrial/domestic wastewater, oil/gas production, mining, or farming
- Pesticides and Herbicides: From agriculture, urban stormwater runoff, and residential uses
- Organic Chemical Contaminants: Synthetic and volatile organic chemicals from industrial processes, petroleum production, gas stations, urban stormwater runoff, and septic systems
- Radioactive Contaminants: Naturally occurring or resulting from oil/gas production and mining
For more information about contaminants and potential health effects, call the EPA's Safe Drinking Water Hotline at (800) 426-4791.

The City of Oakdale's Department of Animal Control serves both Oakdale and Riverbank. Since February 2009, Riverbank has contracted with Oakdale for Animal Control services. The facility, originally built in the 1970s, has been gradually updated to meet the growing needs of the community.
Our team consists of five staff members and a supervisor who manage daily operations. Each city has a designated officer handling animal-related incidents, plus two care staff members who provide additional support as needed. A shelter attendant oversees the daily facility operations and animal care.
Animal Control Officers provide numerous services including:
- Patrolling for lost, injured, and abandoned animals
- Conducting investigations into suspected animal cruelty
- Providing shelter for stray animals
- Assisting owners with finding lost pets
- Offering emergency services after hours
- Enforcing California state and local animal control laws
- Conducting animal licensing inspections
The shelter is supported by volunteers who work with animals in our care, participate in education and fundraising programs, assist with adoption events, and provide low-cost spay/neuter vouchers to help reduce unwanted litters in our community.
Our animal shelter offers a variety of adoptable pets from our region. Most are strays or owner surrenders. Benefits of adopting from our shelter include low-cost spaying/neutering, initial veterinary examinations, vaccinations against common diseases, and the satisfaction of saving a shelter animal's life.
Our facility features:
- 10 inside-outside dog runs
- 4 outdoor dog quarantine kennels
- 9 outdoor overflow/receiving dog runs
- 1 puppy/quarantine indoor kennel
- 1 puppy yard
- 11 indoor quarantine cat kennels
- 1 cat adoption room with space for 6 small kennels or 3 large kennels
- 1 play yard
