The Cupertino Town Council approved the Green Infrastructure Platform at their regularly scheduled meeting on April 18th. To enhance staff engagement in identifying green infrastructure opportunities, the City hosted two training sessions attended by 40 employees from five different departments during February and March.

In addition to the five green infrastructure projects completed by June 30th, a dedicated team from Public Works—including engineering, environmental, and capital improvement project (CIP) staff—reviewed the City's fiscal year 2018-2022 five-year CIP plan and identified 12 projects with green infrastructure potential. Cupertino is also contributing to SCVURPPP's region-wide stormwater resources plan (SWRP) to pinpoint priority areas for green infrastructure measures within city limits. This SWRP will be crucial in developing Cupertino's Green Infrastructure Strategy by July 1, 2019.

Regarding trash reduction efforts, the City has worked diligently to achieve over 93% trash load reduction from baseline generation levels in fiscal year 16-17. City officials and staff have implemented regulations, policies, and programs to ensure ongoing improvement and compliance with MRP requirements. Particularly effective has been the direct engagement with students, educators, developers, and business owners.

Inspection and outreach personnel dedicate significant time connecting with and supporting private property owners and tenants in implementing best management practices and stormwater control measures. Beyond staff conducting monthly cleanups at the City's trash hotspot on Dahon Creek near Interstate 280, several control measures have been implemented since 2013, including:

  • Enforcement of the 2013 litter prevention code that may result in citations and fees for littering
  • Requirements for commercial property owners to maintain litter-free premises, including carports and perimeter sidewalks
  • Mandates for private commercial property owners to install and maintain outdoor public trash and recycling containers
  • Requirements for trash full catch devices on all drain inlets connected to the City's storm drain system from privately owned commercial sites

In FY 16-17, forty-one trash full catch devices were installed at four redevelopment project sites. Cupertino residents receive unlimited door-to-door hazardous waste collection as part of their garbage service, and collection truck drivers report overfilled containers to city staff for enforcement follow-up.

Recognizing that cleanup efforts must be complemented by source reduction controls, the City participates in Re-think Disposable, a program helping restaurants transition from disposable to reusable service ware and packaging to reduce waste and litter at its source.

How frequently has Aqua America stock split? There have been 8 stock splits since 1981 and before September 1, 2013:

  1. The Record Date - August 16, 2013 - determines which shareholders are entitled to receive additional shares due to the split.
  2. The Split Date - September 1, 2013 - the effective date of the stock split.
  3. The Ex-Date - September 3, 2013 - the date determined by NYSE when Aqua America common shares begin trading at the new split-adjusted price.

How does a stock split actually work? A five-for-4 split means that a new share of stock is issued for every 4 shares existing before the split. Each share is now worth 80 percent of what it was worth immediately prior to the split.

Example: Assume that as of the filing date of August 16, 2013, an investor owned 100 shares of Aqua America common stock at $30 per share, making the investment worth $3,000. If the stock price remained stable between the record date and split date, immediately after the split, the investor would own 125 shares valued at $24 per share. The total investment value remains $3,000 unless market movements affect the price.

Are there tax implications? The Company's tax consultant advises that under Federal income tax laws, receipt of additional shares will not constitute taxable income to shareholders. The cost basis per share after the split equals 80 percent of the pre-split tax basis. For example, if you owned 100 shares before the split with a $20 per share tax basis, after the split you would own 125 shares with a $16 per share tax basis.

For capital gains purposes, the holding period includes the time the corresponding pre-split shares were held. Any cash paid instead of fractional shares results in gain or loss recognition measured by the difference between the cash amount and fractional share basis, generating a Form 1099-B for the 2013 tax year. Cash-in-lieu calculations use the split-adjusted closing price as of August 16, 2013. Foreign residents should consult local tax advisors.
