About Us
Water quality is essential for our survival, requiring clean and reliable supplies. The City of Millbrae water supplier works closely with the Bay Area Public Utilities Commission (SFPUC), California Department of Public Health (CDPH), and US Environmental Protection Agency (USEPA) to deliver high-quality water and educate consumers about participating in important decisions.
The Millbrae Water Division implements a comprehensive quality assurance program, collecting over forty monthly samples throughout the system for regular monitoring. Samples are sent to state-certified laboratories for testing, and we're pleased to report that all samples tested negative for coliforms with zero violations of maximum contaminant levels (MCL) during 2016.
Our department continuously monitors all five main entry points to the distribution system plus key locations like tank sites and pump stations. This monitoring uses an automated SCADA (Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition) system providing water managers with real-time quality information. Additionally, the Millbrae water department collaborates with San Mateo County Environmental Health Department on cross-connection prevention programs to eliminate potential contamination through backflow prevention devices.
Our water comes primarily from the San Francisco Regional Water System (SFRWS), owned by the San Francisco Public Utilities Commission (SFPUC). The main source is spring snowmelt flowing down the Tuolumne River to Hetch Hetchy Reservoir. This protected Sierra water supply is exempt from filtration requirements but receives treatment including ultraviolet light disinfection, chlorine treatment, pH adjustment for corrosion control, fluoridation, and chloramination for disinfection.
Hetch Hetchy water is supplemented with water from two local watersheds: the 35,000-acre Alameda Watershed (Calaveras and San Antonio reservoirs) and the 23,000-acre Peninsula Watershed (Crystal Springs, San Andreas, and Pilarcitos reservoirs). These waters are treated at the Sunol Valley and Harry Tracy Water Treatment Plants respectively.
