Since 2014, Vallecitos customers have received 100% imported water from SDCWA, which purchases from MWD sources in Northern California and the Colorado River. In November 2015, to enhance water reliability during drought and regulatory challenges, Vallecitos began receiving desalinated water from the Western Hemisphere's largest desalination facility.

The Claude "Bud" Lewis Desalination Plant in Carlsbad provides high-quality water free from salt and virtually all nutrient, biological, and organic compounds. The plant draws water from Agua Hedionda Lagoon, processes it, and delivers it through a 54-inch pipeline traveling 10 miles east before reaching your tap.

In 2015, Vallecitos received a blend of desalinated and imported water from SDCWA, but in 2016, began receiving water directly from the desalination plant. Whether imported or local, your water remains protected throughout its journey thanks to enhanced security measures, improved sampling protocols, and regular aerial and ground patrols.

Water quality protection extends beyond the thousands of tests performed annually. Vallecitos actively supports regulatory improvements to enhance water quality standards. This comprehensive approach results in the delivery of over 5 billion gallons of exceptional water annually through 19 operational storage reservoirs and 450 miles of pipeline serving a 45-square-mile area including San Marcos, Lake San Marcos, and portions of Escondido, Carlsbad, Vista, and unincorporated San Diego County regions.

For over 60 years, Vallecitos Water District has taken pride in providing high-quality water to its now more than 103,000 residents. Their commitment to excellence is demonstrated in the 2017 water quality test results. After more than 150 types of tests conducted by wholesalers (MWD and SDCWA) and additional testing by the City of Oceanside and Vallecitos, your water has met or exceeded all federal and state potable water standards.

The U.S. Congress has directed the EPA to require water systems to report annually on drinking water quality. Vallecitos supports this regulation and has provided Water Quality Reports to customers for many years.

For over 60 years, Vallecitos Water District has served as your water and wastewater professionals, providing water, wastewater, and recovery services to San Marcos, Lake San Marcos community, portions of Carlsbad, Escondido, Vista, and other unincorporated areas in northern San Diego County.

Originally established as the San Marcos County Water District in 1955 by local residents addressing the diminishing water table in San Marcos and Twin Oaks valleys, the District formed under Division 12 of the Water Code (sections 30000-33901) to provide imported water from Northern California and the Colorado River.

The District continued growing as an independent, special district and in May 1989, changed its name to Vallecitos Water District. Today, with its expanded focus, Vallecitos serves a population exceeding 103,000 within its 45-square-mile boundary.

Guided by a comprehensive Master Plan projecting over 20 years into the future, Vallecitos is dedicated to providing outstanding and sustainable services at the lowest possible cost. The District is governed by a 5-member Board of Directors, with public Board meetings held at the District's Administrative offices at 201 Vallecitos de Oro in San Marcos.
