Killeen obtains its municipal water from Belton Lake, a surface water source in Belton, Texas. The Texas Commission on Environmental Quality (TCEQ) has completed a Source Water Assessment to identify potential contaminants that might affect our water based on human activities and natural conditions.

The Bell County Water Control & Improvement District Number 1, from which we purchase water, received this assessment report. For information about source water assessments and protection efforts, contact the City of Killeen Water & Sewer Services Division.

Water sources (both tap and bottled) include rivers, lakes, streams, ponds, reservoirs, springs and wells. As water travels across land surfaces or through the ground, it naturally collects minerals and sometimes picks up substances from animal presence or human activity.

Potential contaminants in source water before treatment may include:

  • Microbial contaminants
  • Inorganic contaminants
  • Pesticides and herbicides
  • Radioactive contaminants
  • Organic chemical contaminants

All municipal water, including bottled water, may reasonably contain at least small amounts of some contaminants. Their presence doesn't necessarily indicate a health risk. For more information about contaminants and potential health effects, call the EPA's Safe Drinking Water Hotline at (800)426-4791.

The EPA sets regulations limiting contaminant levels in public water systems to ensure safety. FDA regulations establish similar limits for bottled water to provide equivalent public health protection.

Some constituents (like calcium, sodium or iron) may affect taste, color and odor without posing health concerns. These secondary constituents are regulated by Texas, not the EPA.

Certain populations may be more vulnerable to water contaminants than the general public. People with compromised immune systems, including those undergoing chemotherapy, organ transplant recipients, people with HIV/AIDS, some elderly individuals, and infants may face increased infection risks. These individuals should seek advice from their healthcare providers.

All public water suppliers must file annual water loss reports. For calendar year 2017, the City of Killeen reported an estimated loss of 942,600,932 gallons. Water loss occurs through main breaks, leaks, inaccurate meter readings, theft, and other causes. Questions about the water loss report can be directed to (254)501-6500.

City of Killeen Municipal Water Report Info
The EPA requires water systems to test for up to 97 different contaminants. The water quality reports list federally regulated or monitored substances found in Killeen's water supply during 2017 (unless otherwise noted). Some contaminants are monitored less frequently because their concentrations don't change regularly.

Backflow Prevention and Cross-Connection Control programs are essential safeguards in our water system. Under Texas Administrative Code (30 TAC, §290.46(j)), customer service inspections are required before continuous water service can be provided. The city maintains a backflow prevention system to protect against contamination hazards.

Water quality testing results help identify potential issues before they become problems. The Safe Drinking Water Act gives primary responsibility to water suppliers for preventing contaminants from entering the public water system.
