Texas Water Utility Companies

The City of Watauga is committed to providing reliable, safe municipal water to all residents. This summary presents the quality of water supplied to our customers based on the most recent EPA-required testing data. We hope this information helps you better understand what's flowing from your tap.

Some individuals may be more susceptible to contaminants in tap water than the general population. Those with compromised immune systems – including cancer patients undergoing chemotherapy, organ transplant recipients, people with HIV/AIDS, elderly residents, and infants – may face increased health risks. These vulnerable individuals should consult healthcare providers about their water consumption. EPA/CDC guidelines on reducing infection risks from Cryptosporidium and other microbial contaminants are available through the Safe Drinking Water Hotline at (800) 426-4791.

The Texas Commission on Environmental Quality (TCEQ) regulates Watauga's water quality. No violations were reported in the 2017 Water Quality Report, maintaining our Excellent Water System ranking held since 1999. The City's Utility Division conducts monthly water quality monitoring, with additional inspections performed by TCEQ.

Our water comes entirely from surface water sources purchased from Fort Worth, including Lake Bridgeport, Eagle Mountain Lake, Lake Worth, Lake Benbrook, Cedar Creek Reservoir and Richland-Chambers Reservoir. TCEQ continually reviews all Texas drinking water resources to ensure proper protection of these vital supplies.

Water Quality Information:
• The EPA requires testing for up to 97 different substances in municipal water systems
• Secondary constituents like calcium, sodium and iron may affect taste and odor but typically don't pose health risks
• All drinking water, even bottled varieties, may contain some level of contaminants

Water Source Assessment:
The TCEQ conducted a source water assessment of our reservoir system. Fort Worth's water system was determined to be susceptible to certain contaminants based on criteria developed through the state-approved assessment program. The water travels across land surfaces or through ground, dissolving naturally-occurring minerals and sometimes picking up substances from animal or human activity.

City of Watauga Municipal Water Report Information

The City of Watauga was incorporated on October 11, 1958 following a successful petition and election on September 24 that same year. The name "Watauga" comes from Cherokee origins, meaning "town of many springs." Cherokee Indians were the first to settle in this area, attracted by abundant game, fertile fields, and clear spring waters.

Around 1843, pioneers from Tennessee arrived in what would become Watauga. Early settlers included the Walker family (W.A., Margaret and James), Jane Weir, Willie Potts, the Evins family (William, Samuel, Martha and Nancy), the Carlton family (William, Julia and Mary), Syrena Stowel and Sarah Henderson. These settlers established the first church in Watauga - Willow Springs Presbyterian Church - on December 14, 1867.

Transportation development came in 1876 when the railroad reached Texas, connecting both coasts and facilitating movement of people and cattle to the Fort Worth region. In 1930, the Watauga station was relocated to Hodge, temporarily halting local growth. The population remained small - just 50 residents in 1940, growing to 300 by 1964.

Community development accelerated with the formation of a volunteer fire department in 1959, with L.C. Sanders serving as the first Fire Chief. The initial municipal building, housing both fire station and city hall, was constructed at 5633 Linda Drive through volunteer labor with materials costing $1,200.

Today, over 24,000 residents enjoy Watauga's peaceful, friendly atmosphere while maintaining convenient access to downtown Fort Worth, Dallas/Fort Worth Airport, and major employers. The community continues to honor its heritage while providing modern municipal services to its growing population.
