About Us
This report provides an overview of water quality delivered to our customers. The assessment utilizes information from the most recent U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) required testing and is presented in the following pages. We hope this information helps you become more knowledgeable about what's in your tap water.
Water sources (both tap and bottled) include rivers, lakes, streams, ponds, reservoirs, springs and wells. As water travels across land or underground, it dissolves naturally-occurring minerals and, in some cases, radioactive materials, and can pick up substances from animal presence or human activity.
All water, including bottled water, may reasonably contain at least small amounts of some contaminants. The presence of contaminants doesn't necessarily indicate a health risk. To ensure tap water safety, the EPA establishes regulations limiting contaminant levels in public water systems. The Food and Drug Administration sets similar limits for bottled water to provide equivalent public health protection.
Potential source water contaminants include:
- Microbial contaminants (viruses and bacteria) from sewage treatment plants, septic systems, agricultural operations, and wildlife
- Inorganic contaminants (salts and metals) that occur naturally or result from urban runoff, industrial discharge, oil and gas production, mining, or farming
- Pesticides and herbicides from agriculture, urban runoff, and residential uses
- Organic chemical contaminants, including synthetic and volatile compounds from industrial processes, petroleum production, gas stations, urban runoff, and septic systems
- Radioactive contaminants that may occur naturally or result from oil/gas production and mining
Some contaminants may affect taste, color, or odor without posing health concerns. For questions about taste, smell, or color of your tap water, please contact Allan McDonald at 972-230-5725.
DeSoto purchases water from the City of Dallas, which sources from seven locations: Lake Ray Roberts, Lake Lewisville, Lake Grapevine, Lake Ray Hubbard, Lake Tawakoni, Lake Fork, and the Elm Fork of the Trinity River. Monthly quality assessments ensure Dallas water meets all requirements.
Water conservation facts:
- Less than 1% of municipally treated water is used for drinking and cooking
- A full bathtub requires 70 gallons of water; a five-minute shower uses 10-25 gallons
- A dripping faucet (1 drip/second) can waste up to 3,000 gallons annually
- One out of nine people worldwide lacks access to clean water
