Certain segments of the population may be more vulnerable to contaminants in municipal water, including Cryptosporidium. This includes infants, elderly individuals, and those with compromised immune systems such as people undergoing chemotherapy, organ transplant recipients, those on steroid treatments, and individuals with HIV/AIDS or other immune disorders. If you fall into these categories, please consult your healthcare provider about your water consumption. Additional guidelines for reducing Cryptosporidium infection risk are available through the Safe Drinking Water Hotline (800-426-4791).

In 2017, Mansfield Water Utilities celebrated its centennial anniversary with community-wide events. Rather than a typical celebration, they created a commemorative book titled "From Water Street to Water Legacy: 100 Years of Water in Mansfield, TX" that highlighted the often-overlooked role water plays in daily life. The utility also organized family-friendly games and activities at The LOT Downtown venue.

Local businesses participated in the celebration, with Creations Bakery providing special centennial cupcakes and Master Meter Inc. contributing entertainment options. Following Hurricane Harvey, city officials including Mayor David Cook and Water Utilities Director Jeff Price volunteered for a dunk tank fundraiser to support relief efforts.

The water utility system in Mansfield has evolved significantly over its first century, developing infrastructure to accommodate rapid population growth. Looking forward, the utility faces the challenges of maintaining existing systems while continuing to expand services and implement new technologies to better serve residents.

Water quality testing at the Mansfield treatment plant is comprehensive, with approximately 450 manual samples and over 290,000 automated analyzer samples collected daily. Every operational decision considers the impact on end users, reflecting the utility's commitment to public service.

As one utility employee noted when asked about the value of water: "Water is everything—every aspect of life depends on it." This philosophy drives the utility's approach to providing safe, reliable water service to Mansfield's nearly 60,000 residents.

City of Mansfield Municipal Water Report Info

The earliest settlers arrived in the rolling Cross Timber country of north central Texas during the 1840s. Primarily of Scotch-Irish heritage, these pioneer farmers came mostly from southern states, following the frontier westward beyond the Mississippi. They entered lands where Native American tribes had lived for thousands of years.

Comanche groups posed significant challenges to settlement, prompting the U.S. Army to establish Fort Worth in 1849 to protect the scattered homesteads. The area southeast of the fort and Trinity River became relatively secure and populated by the mid-1850s. Historical records document eight related families who migrated from Illinois in 1853, with three Gibson brothers establishing homesteads approximately four miles northwest of present-day Mansfield. This settlement, known as the Gibson Community, had built both a school and church by 1860.

Around 1856, R.S. Man and Julian Feild arrived and constructed a grist mill at what would become Mansfield's center. The community likely already existed in some form, as the Walnut Creek Congregation of the Cumberland Presbyterian Church had organized in 1854. Feild purchased 540 acres in the area, and between 1856-1859, he and Man completed a three-story brick mill powered by steam—the first of its kind in North Texas.

The mill, producing flour and meal, served customers from as far south as San Antonio and north into Oklahoma. Its location in southeastern Tarrant County reflected the advanced state of wheat cultivation in the region and readily available timber for the steam boilers. Feild simultaneously opened a general store across Broad Street and built a log house that served as both family home and travelers' lodging.

By 1860, the community's core was established, with a post office opening that year under Postmaster Julian Feild. During the Civil War, the Man and Feild mill supplied the Confederate Army, with goods transported to Louisiana and Missouri. Unlike many communities, the settlement around the mill prospered throughout the war years.

The community adopted the name "Mansfeild," combining the founders' names. Over time, spelling errors led to the current spelling of "Mansfield," which became officially recognized.
