HEALTH ADVISORY: Some individuals may be more vulnerable than the general population to certain microbial contaminants in municipal water, such as Cryptosporidium. This includes infants, elderly persons, those with compromised immune systems from cancer treatment, organ transplants, steroid therapy, and people with HIV/AIDS or other immune disorders. These individuals should seek advice about municipal water from their healthcare providers. Guidelines for reducing infection risk from Cryptosporidium are available from the Safe Drinking Water Hotline (800-426-4791).

LEAD INFORMATION: If present, elevated lead levels can cause serious health problems, especially for pregnant women and young children. Lead in tap water primarily comes from materials and components associated with service lines and home plumbing. Sharyland Water Supply Corporation is responsible for providing high-quality municipal water but cannot control the materials used in plumbing components. When your water has been sitting for several hours, you can minimize lead exposure by flushing your tap for 30 seconds to 2 minutes before using water for drinking or cooking. If concerned about lead in your water, you may have it tested. Information about lead in water, testing methods, and steps to minimize exposure is available from the Safe Drinking Water Hotline (800-426-4791) or at http://www.epa.gov/safewater/lead.

WATER SOURCE INFORMATION: Our water comes from the Rio Grande River, a SURFACE water source. It travels through irrigation canal systems to our reservoirs before undergoing purification. We operate three treatment plants:

  • Water Treatment Plant No. 1: 3907 E. Main Ave., Alton, Texas (receives water via United Irrigation District canals)
  • Water Treatment Plant No. 2: 12200 N. Ware Rd., McAllen, Texas (receives water via Hidalgo County Irrigation District #1 canals)
  • Water Treatment Plant No. 3: 1310 W. St. Jude Ave., Alton, Texas (receives water via United Irrigation District canals)

SOURCE WATER ASSESSMENT: The TCEQ has completed an assessment of our source water and results indicate some sources may be susceptible to certain contaminants. CONTAMINANT INFORMATION: All municipal water, including bottled water, may reasonably contain at least small amounts of some contaminants. Their presence doesn't necessarily indicate a health risk. Contaminants that may be present in source water include:

  • Microbial contaminants (viruses, bacteria) from sewage treatment plants, septic systems, agricultural operations, and wildlife
