About Us
New Braunfels Utilities offers residents diverse water supply options from multiple sources. The Gruene Surface Water Treatment Plant processes eight million gallons daily, drawing from Guadalupe River rights and water leased from the Encolure Reservoir.
Additionally, NBU operates five Edwards Aquifer groundwater wells and six Trinity Aquifer wells, bringing total water capacity to 29,942-acre feet. The utility plans for future community growth within their service area, demonstrating commitment to long-term customer needs.
Water Quality Information:
NBU's water comes from both surface and groundwater sources including the Edwards South Balcones Fault Zone, Trinity Aquifer, and Guadalupe River. The Texas Commission on Environmental Quality (TCEQ) assessed these sources and found some susceptibility to certain contaminants, which informs our testing protocols. Water Sources and Potential Contaminants:
Municipal water (including tap and bottled varieties) originates from rivers, lakes, streams, ponds, reservoirs, springs and wells. As water travels over land or underground, it dissolves natural minerals and sometimes radioactive materials, and can pick up substances from animal presence or human activity.
All water may reasonably contain small amounts of contaminants, though their presence doesn't necessarily indicate a health risk. For more information about contaminants and potential health effects, call the EPA's Safe Water Hotline at 800-426-4791.
Potential contaminants include:
- Microbial contaminants (viruses, bacteria) from sewage treatment, septic systems, agriculture, and wildlife

- Pesticides and herbicides from agriculture, urban runoff, and residential use

A Superior Water Company - Mustang Water has earned the designation of "Predominant Water Company" from the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality (TCEQ). This regulatory body oversees the Public Municipal Water program under EPA authority. A predominant water organization demonstrates consistent delivery of quality municipal water to residents.
Our History:
Mustang SUD began as Mustang Water Supply Corporation, incorporated in May 1966 with just 50 connections and 5 Board members. Initially, customers read their own meters, and new memberships were limited by system capacity.
By 1980, the system had expanded to approximately 400 customers and installed its first large storage tank (20,000 gallons) at Well #2. In 1985, Mustang received a Water Certificate of Convenience and Necessity from Texas to serve over 100 square miles in NE Denton County.
The organization continued growing with significant infrastructure investments including:
- 1992: Land acquisition at FM 455 and Hwy 377 for the first elevated storage tank
- 1995: Installation of a 300,000-gallon elevated tank and 10-inch line along Hwy 377
- 1996: Customer connections exceeded 1,000 for the first time
- 2000: Conversion from Corporation to Special Utility District
- 2001: Agreements with developers along Highway 380 to share service rights
- 2002: Awarded Wastewater Certificate of Convenience and Necessity
- 2006: New office building opened on FM 2931
- 2009: Completion of 2.25 million gallon Bryan Rd. elevated storage tank
By 2013, Mustang reached 10,000 connections, and by late 2014, the system served more than 12,500 connections. Today's infrastructure includes ten groundwater wells, 2.8 million gallons of daily surface water capacity, and three wastewater treatment plants.
