The Rio Grande River begins in Colorado's San Juan Mountains and travels 1,885 miles before emptying into the Gulf of Mexico between Brownsville, Texas and Matamoros, Mexico. After Mexico gained independence from Spain in 1821, several American states were established in Texas, with border disputes contributing to the Texas Revolution of 1835-1836.
Today, the Rio Grande (known as Rio Bravo in Mexico) forms the international boundary between the two countries for 2,053 kilometers. This vital natural resource supports industry, agriculture, domestic water supply, recreation, and wildlife habitats. Major tributaries include the Rio Conchos and Pecos River. Agricultural areas that rely on river water for irrigation include El Paso/Ciudad Juarez, Eagle Pass/Piedras Negras, and the valley downstream from International Falcon Dam. The river provides the primary drinking water source for up to 98% of the population on both sides of the border.
