City of Kerrville Municipal Water Company and EPACity of Kerrville Municipal Water Report Info
Nestled in the heart of Texas Hill Country along the beautiful Guadalupe River, Kerrville offers residents clean, fresh air and pleasant low-humidity climate year-round. The city is recognized for its stunning landscapes, well-maintained parks, and abundant recreational activities, making it one of the healthiest areas in Texas.
The region's water history dates back to April 1689, when Spanish explorer Alonso De Leon discovered a magnificent river lined with cypress, pecan, and walnut trees, naming it "Our Lady of Guadalupe." While Spanish military units passed through in the 18th century, permanent settlement began in the mid-1800s.
Joshua D. Brown, born in Kentucky in 1816, established one of the first shingle camps in the area in 1846 near a large spring in what is now Kerrville. Though initially driven away by Apache presence, Brown and his followers returned in 1848, naming their settlement Brownsborough. As more settlers arrived to establish sawmills and farms along the river, the community grew.
At Brown's request, the settlement was renamed Kerrsville, honoring his friend and fellow Texas Revolution veteran, Major James Kerr. In 1856, Kerr County was established, and the name eventually became "Kerrville." Joshua Brown, considered the "Father of Kerrville," was the first permanent settler on the upper Guadalupe.
The local economy developed significantly in 1857 when German mill-maker Christian Dietert and millwright Bathasar Lich established a large grist and sawmill. The Charles Schreiner family later expanded into retail, wholesale, banking and agricultural operations that shaped the region's growth.
During the 1860s, Texas wool production boomed, particularly during the Civil War when textile companies increased wool manufacturing. By 1890, Charles Schreiner had elevated Kerrville's prominence through innovative wool warehousing and commission sales operations that were unique in Texas.
The Reconstruction era brought prosperity as demand grew for building materials, farm products, and skilled craftsmen. Growth accelerated as Indian attacks ceased and successful ranching operations expanded. The Kerrville Water Works Company began providing water to residents in 1894, with telephone service following in 1896.
Through diverse economic strengths, Kerrville weathered the Great Depression better than many towns, becoming a regional transportation, banking and medical center. Mooney International, a renowned aircraft manufacturer, moved to Kerrville in 1946, producing innovative single-engine planes.
The area's pleasant climate and beautiful scenery fostered tourism growth after the 1940s. Kerrville continues to prosper with an increasingly diverse economic base that includes business, agriculture, light manufacturing, healthcare, transportation, education, arts and tourism. By the mid-1990s, the Wall Street Journal described Kerrville as "one of the wealthiest communities in America."
