About Us
Health Advisory Notice: Certain members of the population may have increased vulnerability to microbiological contaminants like Cryptosporidium in tap water. This includes infants, elderly individuals, and immunocompromised persons such as cancer patients undergoing treatment, organ transplant recipients, people on steroid medications, and those with HIV/AIDS or other immune disorders. Please consult your healthcare provider regarding your water consumption needs. Additional guidance on reducing infection risk from Cryptosporidium is available through the Safe Drinking Water Hotline at (800) 426-4791.
Community Participation: The Harlingen Waterworks System is governed by a five-member board appointed by the Harlingen City Commission. We encourage all community members to attend our monthly meetings held on the last Wednesday of each month in the second-floor Board Room at 134 East Van Buren, Harlingen, Texas. For meeting schedules or agendas, contact (956) 430-6157 or visit our website at hwws.com.
Lead in Water Advisory: Elevated lead levels can cause serious health concerns, particularly for pregnant women and young children. Lead primarily enters water through service line materials and household plumbing components. While Harlingen Waterworks provides quality water, we cannot control plumbing materials in homes. To minimize lead exposure, flush your tap for 30 seconds to 2 minutes before using water for consumption if it has been sitting for several hours. If concerned, consider water testing. For more information on lead in water, testing methods, and exposure reduction, contact the Safe Drinking Water Hotline or visit http://www.epa.gov/safewater/lead.
Water Source Information: Harlingen Waterworks obtains water from the Rio Grande River in Cameron County. This surface water travels through canals to our storage reservoirs at both water treatment plants before processing. Our Downtown and Runnion water plants are currently active.
Common Contaminant Sources:
- Microbial contaminants (viruses, bacteria) from sewage facilities, septic systems, agricultural operations, and wildlife
- Inorganic contaminants (salts, metals) from natural sources, urban runoff, industrial discharges, oil/gas production, and agriculture
- Pesticides and herbicides from agriculture, urban runoff, and residential usage
- Organic chemical contaminants from industrial processes, petroleum production, gas stations, and waste systems
- Radioactive contaminants from natural sources or oil/gas production activities
EPA regulations limit contaminant levels in public water systems, while FDA establishes similar protections for bottled water. For information about taste, odor, or color concerns, please call (956) 440-6565.
