About Us
In 1996, Congress amended the Safe Drinking Water Act requiring water suppliers to distribute annual Water Quality Reports (Consumer Confidence Reports) to all customers. The City of Mesquite is committed to providing safe, high-quality municipal water and proudly shares this information with our residents.
Our water system maintains a "superior" rating with the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality (TCEQ). Water sources (both tap and bottled) include rivers, lakes, streams, reservoirs, springs, and wells. As water travels across land or underground, it dissolves minerals, potentially radioactive materials, and substances from animal or human activity.
Potential contaminants in source water before treatment include:
- Microbial contaminants
- Inorganic contaminants
- Pesticides and herbicides
- Radioactive contaminants
- Organic chemical contaminants
When water meets federal standards, there may be no health benefits to purchasing bottled water or point-of-use systems. All water sources, including bottled water, may contain small amounts of some contaminants, which doesn't necessarily indicate a health risk. For more information about contaminants and health effects, call the EPA's Safe Drinking Water Hotline: 800-426-4791.
Where does Mesquite get its water?
Mesquite belongs to the North Texas Municipal Water District (NTMWD) serving over 35 North Texas cities. Our primary water source is surface water from Lavon Lake, supplemented by Lake Texoma, Jim Chapman Lake, Lake Tawakoni, and the East Fork Raw Water Supply Project (Wetland). Water treatment occurs at the NTMWD facility in Wylie, Texas before distribution through the City's system.
The NTMWD conducts daily testing of both raw Lavon Lake water and treated water delivered to Mesquite. The Texas Commission on Environmental Quality is updating a Source Water Susceptibility Assessment describing potential contaminant sources. Some information is available on the Texas Drinking Water Watch at www.tceq.state.tx.us/DWW/.
In the 2017 water loss audit submitted to the Texas Water Development Board, the Mesquite water system lost approximately 487,777,089 gallons. For questions about this water loss, please call 972-216-6278.
Special Notice for Vulnerable Populations
Some individuals may be more vulnerable to certain microbial contaminants in municipal water. Infants, elderly persons, those undergoing chemotherapy, organ transplant recipients, those on steroid treatments, and people with HIV/AIDS or immune disorders may face higher infection risks. Please consult your physician about drinking water recommendations. Additional guidelines for reducing Cryptosporidium infection risk are available from the Safe Drinking Water Hotline: 800-426-4791.
Water Treatment Innovations
The North Texas Municipal Water District completed ozone implementation for primary disinfection at the Wylie Water Treatment Plants in 2014 to comply with the Disinfection By-Products 2 Rule (DBP2). The DBP2 Rule modified compliance standards for trihalomethanes and haloacetic acids formed when chlorine is used as the primary disinfectant. Ozone effectively addresses taste and odor compounds in our surface water sources, providing improved flavor and odor for consumers.
For disinfection, NTMWD uses Chloramines, which reduce disinfection byproducts while protecting against waterborne diseases. Chloramines can affect dialysis patients, potentially causing hemolytic anemia if not removed from dialysis water. Medical facilities should ensure their equipment includes appropriate filtration methods. Chloraminated water may also be toxic to fish, requiring special aquarium chemicals or filters.
Public Involvement Opportunities
The Mesquite Utilities Division is governed by Mesquite City Council, which meets the first and third Mondays at 757 N. Galloway Avenue. This report is available to all City of Mesquite water customers at www.cityofmesquite.com/waterqualityreport
Stormwater Awareness
Runoff collected in storm drains flows directly to our lakes and waterways without treatment. Stormwater pollution affects municipal water quality as rainwater and urban runoff carry pollutants from streets and yards into storm drains. These pollutants travel untreated to creeks, streams, and lakes that supply our drinking water. Common household contaminants include pet waste, litter, fertilizers, pesticides, soil, and other pollutants. Please help keep our waters clean by never placing anything in storm drains. Our local waterways provide drinking water, recreation, wildlife habitat, and more. City Ordinance prohibits pollutants from entering the storm drainage system.

The Mesquite Arts Council, established in 1981, originated as part of the Mesquite Chamber of Commerce Cultural Committee. Official recognition by Texas came in 1984 with the development of by-laws, incorporation articles, and tax-exempt status. The successful integration of the Mesquite Community Theater in 1985 allowed the Arts Council to support both the band and symphony through hotel/motel tax revenue distribution.
The introduction of the Local Cultural Grants Program in 1993 by the Arts Council strengthened their commitment to arts services. Currently, the Mesquite Arts Council provides administrative support and policy guidance for the Mesquite Arts Center operations, marketing materials, the public art program, and visual/performance presenting initiatives.
Railroad engineer A.R. Alcott filed the first plat for Mesquite with Dallas County on May 22, 1873. Less than two months later, the first train passed through the community traveling from Shreveport to Dallas, creating significant excitement among new residents who depended on rail service for their community's development.
The town's name likely came from the abundant mesquite trees in the landscape. During the 1870s, the town center consisted primarily of a saloon, blacksmith shop, general store, post office, terminal, and four homes. The wooden businesses faced Front Street, the main thoroughfare. Incorporation wouldn't come for another 14 years.
On December 3, 1887, an election resulted in 25 votes for incorporation and 14 against. Mesquite became the second community outside Dallas proper to incorporate (after Lancaster). The first official election in April 1888 saw J.E. Russell elected mayor, with others like R.S. Kimbrough, J.C. Rugel, T.L. Paschall, and G.B. Net involved in the city's founding.
As commerce expanded, residents advocated for an official town square. Many business owners replaced wooden structures with modern brick buildings after a new brick plant opened. About 30 years after the town's beginning, a public square became Mesquite's center, creating more business space and spurring growth.
Mesquite's population grew gradually, starting with just 135 residents in the 1890 U.S. Census. A decade later, it had grown by only 270 people. By 1960, the population reached 27,345, and by 2010, an estimated 139,550 people called Mesquite home according to NCTCOG data.
