About Us
Municipal water sources include rivers, lakes, reservoirs, springs, and wells. As water moves through the environment, it naturally dissolves minerals and can pick up substances from human activities and wildlife. Several types of contaminants may be present in source water:
- Microbial contaminants: Bacteria and viruses potentially from sewage treatment facilities, septic systems, agricultural operations, and wildlife
- Inorganic contaminants: Salts and metals occurring naturally or resulting from urban runoff, industrial discharge, oil and gas production, or farming
- Pesticides and herbicides: Agricultural runoff, urban storm water, and residential usage
- Organic chemical contaminants: Byproducts from industrial processes, petroleum production, gas stations, and septic systems
- Radioactive contaminants: Naturally occurring or from oil/gas production and mining
Elevated lead levels pose serious health risks, particularly for pregnant women and young children. Lead primarily comes from service lines and home plumbing materials. S S WSC provides quality water but cannot control materials used in household plumbing. To minimize lead exposure, flush your tap for 30 seconds to 2 minutes before using water for consumption after periods of non-use. If concerned about lead, consider testing your water. Information about lead in water is available from the Safe Drinking Water Hotline or at http://www.epa.gov/safewater/lead.
S S Water Supply Company sources its water from groundwater in the Carrizo Aquifer. The Texas Commission on Environmental Quality (TCEQ) has assessed our source water, finding some sources susceptible to contamination. For source water protection information, please contact Herb Williams at (830) 779-2837.
Our water exceeds secondary limits for iron and manganese. The secondary limit is 0.5 ppm, while our water averages 0.75 ppm with peaks up to 2.45 ppm. We use a sequestering agent to prevent iron oxidation and are designing filtration systems to reduce iron content. Each minimum bill includes 2,500 gallons to help customers flush discolored water from their plumbing.
All municipal water contains some contaminants, though this doesn't necessarily indicate health risks. Even bottled water may contain low levels of contaminants. Immunocompromised individuals, including those undergoing chemotherapy, organ transplant recipients, those on steroid treatments, and people with HIV/AIDS may be particularly vulnerable to certain microbial contaminants. These individuals should consult healthcare providers about their drinking water.
