Understanding Lawrence's Sewer System

When you use household water fixtures, the waste travels through your property's "service lateral" pipe before connecting to the main sewer lines. Property owners are responsible for maintaining these service laterals, while the City's Water & Sewer Department handles the main infrastructure through regular cleaning and inspections.

SSOs occur when untreated sewage escapes the system before reaching the treatment plant. Common causes include pipe collapses, grease buildup, and debris blockages. Warning signs include water discharge from manholes, basement flooding, and sewage odors. These incidents pose serious environmental and health risks. Cryptosporidium Monitoring
The City regularly tests for Cryptosporidium, a microscopic parasite found in surface water throughout the U.S. During 2016 monitoring, 0.28 oocysts were detected in untreated river water. Lawrence's treatment plant employs UV disinfection specifically to address this pathogen. While healthy individuals can typically recover from cryptosporidiosis within weeks, those with compromised immune systems should consult healthcare providers about precautionary measures.

Lawrence began providing running water in 1874. The current water treatment facility, operational since 2007, processes water from the Merrimack River (Source ID#3149000-01S) using conventional treatment methods.
