The Water We All Consume

Yes, the municipal water provided by the City of Plaquemine is confirmed safe for consumption. Plaquemine City Light and Water proudly presents its Annual Water Quality Report for 2014. This document aims to inform residents about the quality standards of the water and services delivered daily. (Este informe contiene información muy importante sobre su agua potable. Tradúzcalo o hable con alguien que lo entienda bien).

We take pride in delivering high-quality municipal water. Our mission is to consistently provide safe and dependable water while continuously enhancing our treatment processes and protecting vital water resources. The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) mandates that every water supplier nationwide present customers with an annual Water Quality Report. The Louisiana Department of Health and Hospitals: Office of Public Health routinely monitors water according to federal and state regulations.

Water Quality Assessment

For the monitoring period of January 1st through December 31st, 2014, tests confirmed our municipal water met all EPA requirements and standards. The Louisiana Department of Health and Hospitals regularly monitors contaminants in accordance with federal and local regulations. It's worth noting that the mere presence of certain substances doesn't necessarily indicate a health risk.

The Source Water Assessment Program (SWAP) results are publicly accessible at the Plaquemine Director of Utility office (225-687-2461). To ensure tap water safety, EPA establishes regulations limiting contaminant levels in public water systems. FDA regulations similarly set limits for bottled water contaminants to provide equivalent public health protection.

Water Sources

Five groundwater wells comprise the City of Plaquemine's water supply. Three wells are located in Plaquemine, while two are situated in West Baton Rouge Parish. The West Baton Rouge wells reach depths between 2,300-2,400 feet to access groundwater. In Plaquemine, the wells extend 360 feet deep.

Although our water meets all EPA standards, Plaquemine City Light and Water has invested $2.5 million in a water treatment facility to further enhance water quality. The Source Water Assessment Plan (SWAP) evaluates the delineated area surrounding our water sources where contaminants could potentially reach the supply. Our system's susceptibility rating is "MEDIUM" according to this assessment.

Health Considerations

Some individuals may be more vulnerable to water contaminants than the general population. People with compromised immune systems, including cancer patients undergoing chemotherapy, organ transplant recipients, those with HIV/AIDS or other immune disorders, some elderly individuals, and infants can be particularly susceptible to infections. Water containing arsenic above the MCL over extended periods may cause circulatory system problems, scarring damage, or increase cancer risk. EPA/CDC guidelines for reducing infection risk from Cryptosporidium and other microbiological contaminants are available through the Safe Water Hotline (1-800-426-4791).

Coliforms are bacteria naturally present in the environment used as indicators that other potentially harmful organisms may be present. When coliforms are found in more samples than permitted, this serves as a warning of potential issues. No additional required health effects violation notices were identified.
