About Us
This table includes various technical terms you might not recognize. To help you understand these terms, we've provided these helpful definitions:
Parts per million (ppm) or Milligrams per liter (mg/l) - equivalent to one ounce in 7,813 gallons of water.
Parts per billion (ppb) or Micrograms per liter - equivalent to one ounce in 6,813,000 gallons of water.
Action Level (AL) - the concentration of a contaminant which, if exceeded, requires water systems to implement specific treatment protocols.
Maximum Contaminant Level (MCL) - the highest permissible level of a contaminant allowed in municipal water, set as close to the MCLGs as feasible using available treatment technology.
Running Annual Average (RAA) - calculated by averaging measurements taken over quarterly periods.
While the above list shows detected contaminants, the CBPU has tested for over 145 different potential contaminants. Substances that may be present in source water include:
- Microbial contaminants from sewage treatment facilities, septic systems, agricultural operations, and wildlife
- Inorganic contaminants like salts and metals that occur naturally or result from urban runoff, industrial discharge, or farming
- Pesticides and herbicides from agriculture, urban runoff, and residential usage
- Organic chemical contaminants from industrial processes, petroleum production, gas stations, and septic systems
- Radioactive contaminants that occur naturally or result from oil/gas production and mining
Lead Information: Elevated lead levels can cause serious health problems, especially for pregnant women and young children. Lead typically enters water through service lines and home plumbing materials. The Coldwater Board of Public Utilities provides high-quality water but cannot control plumbing component materials. If your water has been sitting for several hours, flush your tap for 30 seconds to 2 minutes before using for drinking or cooking. For more information on lead testing, visit http://www.epa.gov/safewater/lead.
Immunocompromised individuals, cancer patients, organ transplant recipients, those with HIV/AIDS, elderly persons, and infants may be particularly vulnerable to certain contaminants. These individuals should seek advice from healthcare providers regarding municipal water consumption.
All water sources potentially contain some contaminants, whether naturally occurring or human-made. Even bottled water can reasonably be expected to contain small amounts of certain substances. The presence of contaminants doesn't necessarily indicate a health risk.
The Coldwater Board of Public Utilities operates a water treatment facility designed to process approximately 6 million gallons daily, specifically engineered to remove iron and manganese impurities before distribution. We ask all residents to help protect our water sources—the heart of our community and our children's future.
