Final Bill Requests When Selling Your Home

When selling your property, you'll need to determine when your final water bill should be calculated—either by the closing date or when transferring keys, as specified in your purchase agreement. Remember that water bills constitute a lien on the property.

To transfer service, please contact the Novi Water Department at 248-347-0440 or 248-735-5661 to request a final meter reading. Note that meter readings are not accepted by phone. Please provide:

• Date for the meter reading
• Contact name and phone number
• Service address requiring the reading
• Mailing address or pickup/fax details for the bill

Final bills can be collected at the Novi Treasurer's Office (45175 Ten Mile Rd.) after 9:30am on the reading date.

Payment Locations

Water bills should be paid at the City of Novi's Treasurer's Office located at 45175 Ten Mile, Novi, MI 48375. NO payments are accepted at the Public Works Facility on Lee BeGole Drive.

Sprinkler System Meters

The City of Novi does not provide separate meters for lawn sprinklers. All water passing through your meter incurs both water and sewer charges, making a separate meter unnecessary. Additionally, a minimum bill would still apply even when the sprinkler system is inactive.

Water Rate Variations

Many factors affect the rates communities pay to Great Lakes Water Authority (GLWA). Local water rates are established by individual municipalities and include costs for maintaining local infrastructure such as water mains, pumps, and storage facilities.

Distance impacts water delivery costs, as greater energy is required to pump water farther and to higher elevations. Communities located at greater distances and higher elevations bear these increased costs, following billing standards recommended by the American Water Works Association.

GLWA's wholesale water rates vary by community based on usage patterns, distance from treatment facilities, and elevation changes. Communities with higher peak demand pay more because GLWA must build additional production capacity to meet those demands.

Billing Structure

While your water comes from GLWA and sewage treatment is handled by Oakland County Water Resources Commission (OCWRC), your bill comes from Novi because they maintain the local infrastructure between your home and these regional systems. Novi handles meter reading, billing, and infrastructure maintenance including pipes, pumps, and storage tanks.

Your water bills include charges from GLWA, OCWRC, and Novi's costs for delivering these services to your property.
