Union Township Municipal Water Report Information

The Charter Township of Union traces its origins and name to the Civil War era. On March 9, 1861, just weeks before the first shots at Fort Sumter divided the nation, the inaugural Board of Supervisors officially established Union Township. Their name choice clearly indicated where their loyalties stood in the approaching conflict - firmly with the Union.

In 2011, Union Township celebrated its 150th anniversary. Originally home to magnificent pine and hardwood forests and serving as the winter residence for Chippewa tribes, the area later became central to Michigan's lumber industry and early oil development. Michigan had achieved statehood in 1837.

The first European settlers arrived in 1854 when John Hursh and his family established themselves in the region. Various settlements within the township's 36 square miles have since disappeared or been incorporated into Mount Pleasant, which sits at Union Township's center. Mount Pleasant was designated the county seat in 1860, just a year after Isabella County's establishment in 1859. It officially became a village in 1875 and later a city in 1889.

The histories of Mount Pleasant and surrounding Union Township have been intertwined since their founding days.
