Mike O'Malley, often referred to as "The Benton Harbor Water Guy," leads the team responsible for water distribution, sanitary sewer collection, and stormwater management. The Water Plant, situated in the southwest corner of Jean Klock Park, was built in the 1950s as a complete treatment facility featuring chemical addition, mixing chambers, filters, storage, and distribution pumps.
Due to aging infrastructure and several failures, a $12 million renovation project was undertaken. Funding came through Michigan's Drinking Water Revolving Loan Funds and the American Resources and Recovery Act, which reduced the loan amount by 40%. The two-year project, completed by Davis Construction and subcontractors, renovated existing systems and added new treatment facilities. The plant now has a 50+ year lifespan and can process up to 12 million gallons daily.
Consumer Confidence Reports (CCRs) are required annually by the EPA by July 1. These reports provide residents with information about water sources, contamination risks, regulated contaminants detected, potential health effects, and restoration efforts.
