Michigan Water Utility Companies

About the System: Berkley receives water from the Southeastern Oakland County Water Authority (SOCWA) via three connection points. SOCWA delivers GLWA water through customer distribution networks to approximately 210,000 residents across a 56 square mile region. Current member communities include Berkley, Beverly Hills, Bingham Farms, Birmingham, Clawson, Huntington Woods, Lathrup Village, Pleasant Ridge, Royal Oak, Southfield, and Southfield Township.

Source Water Information: Berkley's water comes primarily from the Detroit River, situated within Lake St. Clair and several watersheds including Clinton River, Detroit River, Rouge River, and Ecorse River in the U.S., plus portions of Thames River, Little River, Turkey Creek and Sydenham watersheds in Canada.

Water Quality Assessment: In 2005, Michigan's Department of Environmental Quality partnered with several agencies to conduct a source water assessment. The Detroit River source was rated as highly susceptible to potential contamination, though all treatment plants using this source have historically provided satisfactory treatment. The Lake Huron water intake was classified as having moderately low susceptibility to contaminants.

Protection Programs: GLWA has implemented several protection measures including chemical control, spill response protocols, and a mercury reduction program. In 2015, GLWA received grants to develop comprehensive source water protection programs for both the Detroit River and Lake Huron water treatment intakes.

Health Information: All water, including bottled water, may contain small amounts of contaminants. Their presence doesn't necessarily indicate a health risk. Potential contaminants include microbes from sewage treatment facilities, inorganic compounds like salts and metals, agricultural pesticides, organic chemicals from industrial processes, and naturally occurring radioactive materials.

Lead Awareness: Elevated lead levels can cause serious health problems, especially for pregnant women and young children. Lead primarily enters drinking water through service lines and household plumbing materials. Berkley is responsible for providing quality water but cannot control plumbing component materials. You can minimize potential lead exposure by flushing your tap for 30 seconds to 2 minutes before using water for drinking or cooking.

Special Health Considerations: Some individuals may be more vulnerable to contaminants than the general population. Immuno-compromised persons, cancer patients undergoing chemotherapy, organ transplant recipients, people with HIV/AIDS, the elderly, and infants should seek advice from healthcare providers regarding appropriate precautions.
