Municipal water for the District of Columbia is sourced from the Potomac River, a surface water supply. DC Water, Fairfax Water, and Arlington County purchase treated water from the US Army Corps of Engineers Washington Aqueduct. The Aqueduct extracts approximately 140 million gallons daily from the Potomac River at Great Falls and Little Falls locations.

The treatment process at the Dalecarlia and McMillan plants includes multiple steps to ensure safety: sedimentation, filtration, fluoridation, pH adjustment, primary disinfection with free chlorine, secondary disinfection with chloramines through hydrogen addition, and corrosion control using orthophosphate. DC Water distributes this treated water to over 700,000 residential, commercial, and government customers throughout the District of Columbia and portions of Maryland and Virginia. All water sources (both tap and bottled) include rivers, lakes, streams, ponds, reservoirs, springs, and wells. As water travels across land surfaces to the Potomac, it dissolves naturally occurring minerals and potentially radioactive materials, and can pick up substances from animal or human activities.

Before treatment, source water may contain several types of impurities:

• Microbial contaminants including viruses and bacteria from agricultural operations, septic systems, wastewater facilities, and wildlife
• Inorganic contaminants such as salts and metals that occur naturally or result from urban runoff, farming, and wastewater discharges
• Pesticides and herbicides from various sources including agriculture, urban stormwater runoff, and residential uses
• Organic chemical contaminants, including synthetic and volatile compounds from industrial processes, petroleum production, gas stations, stormwater runoff, and septic systems
• Radioactive contaminants that may be naturally occurring or result from mining activities

DC Water maintains protocols to immediately notify customers if source water contamination creates unsafe conditions for consumption or use.
