About Us
We're pleased to provide you with this year's Annual Municipal Water Quality Report. This document is designed to inform you about the quality water and services we deliver to your home every day.
Our constant goal is to provide you with a safe and dependable supply of municipal water. We want you to understand the efforts we make to continually improve the water treatment process and protect our valuable water resources. We remain committed to ensuring the quality of your water.
Our water comes from both reservoirs and four groundwater wells. The reservoir water undergoes treatment at our filtration plant, while well water receives on-site treatment before being added to supplement our overall water supply.
This report offers a summary of your water quality and what it means for you and your family. We encourage our valued customers to stay informed about their water utility. If you'd like to learn more, please join us at any of our regularly scheduled Borough Council Committee meetings held on the last Thursday of each month at 7:00 PM.
The East Stroudsburg Water Department consistently monitors for contaminants in your municipal water according to Federal and State regulations. The table in our full report shows monitoring results from January 1st through December 31st, 2017.
All municipal water, including bottled water, may reasonably be expected to contain at least small amounts of some substances. It's important to understand that the presence of these elements doesn't necessarily indicate a health risk. State regulations allow us to monitor for certain contaminants less frequently than once per year because their concentrations typically don't change rapidly.
MCLs (Maximum Contaminant Levels) are set at very strict levels for health protection. To understand the potential health effects described for many regulated constituents, a person would need to drink 2 liters of water daily at the MCL level for a lifetime to have a one-in-a-million chance of experiencing the described health effect.
Some individuals may be more vulnerable to water contaminants than the general population. People with compromised immune systems—such as cancer patients undergoing chemotherapy, organ transplant recipients, individuals with HIV/AIDS or other immune disorders, some elderly people, and infants—may be particularly at risk. These individuals should seek advice about municipal water from their healthcare providers. EPA/CDC guidelines on appropriate means to reduce infection risk from cryptosporidium and other microbiological contaminants are available from the Safe Drinking Water Hotline (800-426-4791).

The Bristol County Water Authority acquired the Bristol County Water Company on November 25, 1986. The Authority was formed in 1984 to address ongoing water challenges in Bristol County. Originally established in 1883 as the Bristol and Warren Water Works, the private company later acquired the Barrington Water Company (incorporated in 1887) in 1933, changing its name to Bristol County Water Company the following year.
The Authority now supplies municipal water to Bristol County, which encompasses 25 square miles. The system is located southeast of Providence at the northern end of Narragansett Bay. The area is predominantly residential with some light industrial and commercial development. Bristol County's proximity to major highways (I-95 and I-195) provides convenient access to Providence, Cape Cod, and Boston.
The Authority serves the communities of Bristol, Warren, and Barrington, Rhode Island, with an estimated population of 49,875 across 16,861 metered customers. The utility has experienced steady though limited customer growth in recent years. Administrative offices are located at 450 Child Street in Warren, while Production and Distribution Departments operate from facilities at 472 Child Street. Additional production facilities are at the Nayatt Road Well Station and treatment plant in Barrington.
Average daily demand remains stable at approximately 4.0 million gallons. Since December 1998, treated water has been purchased from the Providence Water Supply Board and delivered to Bristol County via the East Bay Pipeline—a major project initiated in 1988 and completed a decade later to transport needed municipal water across Narragansett Bay.
Until 2011, raw water came from four distributing reservoirs (Kickemuit, Swansea, Anawan, and Shad Factory) with a combined storage capacity of 460 million gallons. This water was treated at the Child Street Treatment Plant in Warren. In 2011, the treatment plant was temporarily closed due to various issues, and the system began receiving its entire supply from the Providence Association. The plant is being maintained as an emergency supply until alternative sources are fully evaluated.
