About Us
Our municipal water is sourced from the Allegheny River with an intake positioned upstream from the Hulton Bridge. Water undergoes treatment at our specialized facility. We've implemented an approved Source Water Protection Program in collaboration with neighboring water systems.
Our assessment identifies potential contamination sources including wastewater facilities, stormwater runoff, industrial discharges, and transportation-related spills from rail, highway, and pipeline traffic. The most significant contamination risk comes from potential petroleum pipeline ruptures. A comprehensive assessment report is available for review at the ACHD office (412-578-8047).
Certain individuals may have heightened vulnerability to water contaminants compared to the general population. People with compromised immune systems—such as cancer patients undergoing chemotherapy, organ transplant recipients, individuals with HIV/AIDS, some elderly residents, and infants—may face increased infection risks. These individuals should consult their healthcare providers regarding water consumption. EPA/CDC guidelines about reducing infection risks from Cryptosporidium and other microbial contaminants are available via the Safe Drinking Water Hotline (1-800-426-4791).
The Authority's primary responsibility is to remove or reduce contaminants to levels meeting or exceeding all health standards established by federal and state regulators. We conduct routine monitoring of your water supply as required by law. Our monitoring results for January 1st through December 31st, 2017 are shown in the accompanying table. While all municipal water, including bottled varieties, may contain trace amounts of some contaminants, their presence doesn't necessarily indicate a health risk.

Where Does My Water Come From?
Oakmont Water Authority customers benefit from abundant water supplied by the Allegheny River. Our Hulton Purification Plant draws directly from this vital waterway, which is continuously replenished by northern reservoirs including Kinzua Dam and Allegheny Reservoir, Tionesta Lake, East Branch Clarion River Lake, Mahoning Creek Lake, Crooked Creek Lake, Conemaugh River Lake, and Loyalhanna Lake, plus numerous underground sources, creeks, and springs. Collectively, our treatment facility delivers approximately two billion gallons of purified water annually.
How is My Water Treated & Purified?
Our treatment process involves multiple critical steps. Initially, raw water from the Allegheny River receives sodium permanganate to address taste, odor, iron, manganese, and disinfection byproducts. The water then flows to mixing tanks where carbon, polyaluminumchloride, and soda ash create "floc" particles that become heavy enough to settle in basins where mechanical scrapers remove sediment. We add fluoride to prevent tooth decay and chlorine for disinfection.
After mixing, water travels to sedimentation basins where heavier particles settle out. It then passes through layers of fine coal, silicate sand, and gravel filters that remove smaller suspended particles. The clarified water moves to underground storage chambers. Additional chlorine provides further disinfection, while phosphate helps control corrosion. Sodium hydroxide adjusts pH to optimal levels. Before distribution, ultraviolet treatment destroys microbiological contaminants like cryptosporidium parvum and Giardia. From March through November, we incorporate small amounts of ammonia to form chloramines, which help reduce disinfection byproducts.
