Pennsylvania Water Utility Companies

The Moon Township Municipal Authority (MTMA) sources its water from a sand and gravel alluvium deposit in the Ohio River's floodplain. The system includes one great well, two straight wells, and a surface intake positioned along the Ohio River's southern bank. Their advanced treatment facility effectively processes a blend of groundwater and surface water sources.

Public participation is encouraged in community decisions affecting water quality. Monthly Municipal Authority meetings are held on the third Wednesday at 5:00 p.m. in the Moon Township Community Service Center at 1700 Beaver Grade Road, with open public attendance.

We're pleased to report that our municipal water meets or exceeds all federal and state requirements. MTMA (Public Water Supply #5020011) conducts regular monitoring for contaminants in accordance with Federal and local regulations. Our 2017 water quality data showed no violations, as demonstrated in the monitoring tables.

All water sources face potential contamination risks, whether natural or human-caused. Ground hydrant contamination may occur from transportation accidents or industrial spills near wells. Wellhead protection practices help minimize groundwater contamination risk. Surface water contamination could result from spills reaching the Ohio River or its tributaries. During such events, the system can temporarily switch to 100% well-water until river conditions improve.

For questions about this report or your water service, please contact Steve Riley, MTMA General Manager, at 412-264-4300 ext. 114 between 8:00 a.m. and 4:45 p.m.

Special Health Information: Some individuals may be more vulnerable to certain water contaminants than the general population. Immuno-compromised persons, including cancer patients undergoing chemotherapy, organ transplant recipients, people with HIV/AIDS, some elderly individuals, and infants may face increased infection risks. These individuals should seek advice from healthcare providers about their drinking water. EPA/CDC guidelines on reducing Cryptosporidium and microbial contamination risks are available from the Safe Water Drinking Hotline (800-426-4791).

Source Water Assessment: In 2009, the PA Department of Environmental Protection approved the Source Water Protection Plan for MTMA's three groundwater wells and surface water supply. The assessment identified the CSX Railroad and PA Route 51 as primary contamination risk sources. Complete reports are available for review at the PADEP Pittsburgh Regional Office or online at www.dep.state.pa.us.

Water Contaminant Information: All drinking water, including bottled water, naturally contains small amounts of some contaminants. Their presence doesn't necessarily indicate a health risk. As water travels over land or underground, it dissolves minerals, sometimes including radioactive material, and can pick up substances from animal presence or human activity. Contaminants may include microbial agents from sewage facilities or wildlife; inorganic compounds like salts and metals; agricultural chemicals; organic compounds from industrial processes; and naturally occurring radioactive materials.

The EPA establishes regulations limiting contaminant levels in public water systems, while FDA regulations set similar standards for bottled water, both designed to ensure public health protection.
