This report outlines our water quality and what it means for you. We're committed to keeping you informed about your water supply. If you'd like to learn more, please join us at our regular monthly meetings. We hold public meetings on the 3rd Wednesday of each month at 10:00 AM at the Authority office.
Our dedicated team at Schuylkill County Municipal Authority works around the clock to deliver high-quality water to every tap. We ask all residents to help us protect our vital water sources – they're the heart of our community, essential to our way of life, and critical for our children's future.
The Philadelphia Water Department completed a source water assessment for the PA DEP covering the entire Schuylkill River Watershed, including all SCMA surface water supplies. This report, dated March 14, 2003, was later supplemented by SCMA's Source Water Protection Plan, approved by PaDEP in 2008.
Our Protection Plan identifies potential contamination sources, educates the public on source water protection, and develops sustainable strategies for long-term protection of our water resources. The Plan includes comprehensive emergency protocols for responding to source water contamination events. This collaborative effort between six local water providers is available for review at our office.
The first initiative from this plan is a spill response signage program along Interstate I-81 to help protect our water sources from potential contamination events.

The Schuylkill County Municipal Authority (SCMA) was established on August 22, 1961, when the Schuylkill County Commissioners approved its Incorporation. On December 4, 1961, the SCMA Board of Directors voted to acquire the Pottsville Water Company (PWC) for $7,622,000.00.
The PWC had a rich history dating back to April 11, 1834, when it was chartered with $20,000 in capital, divided into 800 shares at $25 each. The initial water source was a spring at Eleventh and Mahantongo Streets in Pottsville, connected by 3,500 feet of 6" pipe and 700 feet of 4" pipe to serve downtown residents.
The system expanded significantly over the decades. In 1854, the Wolf Creek supply was added, followed by service extensions to St. Clair, Port Carbon, Palo Alto, and Mt. Carbon. Major infrastructure additions included the Park Basin equalizing dam (1856), Eisenhuth Dam (1874), and collection systems for Mill Creek, Cranberry Run, Tar Run, Kaufman Run, Mud Run, and Indian Run.
Further water sources were developed with the construction of Kaufman (1885), Wolf Creek (1910), Indian Run (1926), and Tar Run (1933) reservoirs. The system expanded through acquisitions of the East Norwegian Township, Norwegian Township, and New Castle Township water companies by 1929.
Significant infrastructure improvements continued throughout the 20th century, including caretaker residences, pumping stations, and treatment facilities. The first treatment system for PWC was built in 1924 as a meter and chlorination house on Broad Mountain. In 1961, SCMA formed and purchased the Pottsville Water Company, continuing its legacy of expansion and improvement.
Following the 1976 Federal Drinking Water Act, SCMA constructed several filtration plants: Mt. Laurel (1991), Broad Mountain (1993), and Indian Run (1995). In 1991, SCMA expanded into wastewater treatment with the Gordon Wastewater Treatment Plant. The Authority continues to ensure high-quality water services throughout Schuylkill County.
