Established in 1949, construction of the initial sewage treatment plant near the confluence of the Youghiogheny and Monongahela rivers was completed in 1960. This facility initially offered primary treatment only, as was standard practice at that time.
With advancements in sewage treatment technology, the plant underwent a significant expansion completed in 1976, which incorporated the secondary aeration system currently in place to provide enhanced purification. A third expansion, finished in 2015, added Sequential Batch Reactors designed to work alongside the existing treatment infrastructure.
The McKeesport Sewage Treatment Plant today operates as an Activated Sludge facility designed to process 13 million gallons daily under normal conditions and 56 million gallons at peak flow. The complex consists of the Main Headworks building, Plant Pump Station, 4 Sequence Batch Reactor tanks, 6 Aeration tanks, 6 Digester tanks, 3 Blower structures, 2 Clarifiers, Chlorine building, 2 Chlorine Contact tanks, Ultraviolet Ray disinfection tank, Control and Incineration building, Maintenance Shop/Garage complex, Administration building, and the 28th Street Billing Office/Garage complex.
The system receives sewage from seven pump/lift stations through more than 104 miles of interceptor and transmission lines. The Duquesne and Dravosburg Treatment Plants, though smaller, operate similarly to serve their respective areas with their own collection systems.
