This report contains vital information about your municipal water supply. If you need assistance understanding this document, please ask someone to translate it for you.

Safe Water Supply Information

Your municipal water comes from five groundwater wells ranging from 403 to 750 feet deep, drawing from the Jordan-Wonewoc, Prairie Du Chien-Jordan, and Jordan aquifers. Faribault is committed to providing reliable, safe water that meets all federal and state quality standards.

For questions about Faribault's water quality, please contact Michael Glende, Resources Superintendent, at 507-838-5559 or mglende@ci.faribault.mn.us. We welcome your participation in decisions affecting water quality.

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency establishes drinking water standards that limit contaminant levels to ensure public safety. Similarly, the FDA regulates bottled water quality. All water sources, including bottled water, may contain trace amounts of contaminants, which doesn't necessarily indicate a health risk.

Monitoring Results

This report covers monitoring from January 1 to December 31, 2018. We collaborate with the Minnesota Department of Health to test for over 100 potential contaminants. Finding small amounts of contaminants is normal – no water supply is completely free of impurities.

In addition to regulated contaminants, we also monitor for unregulated substances. Detection of an unregulated contaminant doesn't automatically signal a health concern, as evaluation standards consider current health research. These comparison values focus solely on health impacts and don't account for detection limitations or treatment costs.

Water with contaminant levels below the comparison values presents minimal health risks. However, certain populations – including pregnant women, infants, children, elderly individuals, and those with compromised immune systems – may wish to take additional precautions when contaminant levels approach these thresholds.

Faribault Municipal Water Report Info

Alexander Faribault, a pioneering fur trader and entrepreneur, established Faribault in 1852, capitalizing on the area's natural beauty, resources, and strategic location. By the 1860s, the town gained national recognition as an educational and religious center, largely due to Bishop Henry Whipple's efforts in developing interconnected churches and schools. This achievement, alongside the establishment of the renowned State Academies for the Blind and Deaf, earned Faribault the nickname "Athens of the West."

As the community flourished, numerous architecturally significant homes, churches, and public buildings were constructed. Today, Faribault proudly features more than 40 individual properties listed on the National Register of Historic Places. For more information, please visit the Heritage Preservation Commission website.

Water Conservation Program

To preserve water resources and help the city's system meet peak demands, annual water restrictions are implemented from May 1 to September 30. Odd-Even watering schedules based on street addresses are enforced, and no irrigation is permitted between 10 a.m. and 5 p.m. daily.

Weekly Watering Schedule:

  • Monday: No watering permitted
  • Tuesday, Thursday, Saturday (before 10 a.m./after 5 p.m.): Even-numbered residences and commercial customers
  • Wednesday, Friday, Sunday (before 10 a.m./after 5 p.m.): Odd-numbered residences, HOAs, and apartment complexes

Water Treatment Infrastructure

Faribault's municipal water division maintains comprehensive infrastructure including 2 pumping stations, 4 storage tanks, 5 production wells, chemical treatment facilities, hydrants, customer meters, valves, and water mains. The department employs 3 full-time staff members under the supervision of a Public Works Superintendent, with additional support from the utility subdivision when needed for operations and maintenance.
