About Us
The City of Hazel Park purchases its municipal water from the Great Lakes Water Authority (formerly DWSD). The water is sourced from surface water at the Belle Isle intake and processed at the Northeast Treatment Facility on Eight Mile Road near Whirlpool Road. Hazel Park also receives water from Lake Huron that's treated at the Lake Huron Plant in Fort Gratiot, Michigan.
The source water originates from the Detroit River, located within Lake Huron, Lake St. Clair, Clinton River, Detroit River, Rouge River, and Ecorse River watersheds in the U.S., as well as parts of the Thames River, Little River, Turkey Creek, and Sydenham watersheds in Canada.
In 2004, the Michigan Department of Environmental Quality partnered with the U.S. Geological Survey, the Great Lakes Water Authority, and the Michigan Public Health Institute to perform a source water assessment. The susceptibility ranking uses a seven-tiered scale from "very low" to "very high" based on geologic sensitivity, water chemistry, and potential contamination sources. The Detroit River source water intakes were determined to be highly susceptible to potential contamination, while the Lake Huron source water intake has a moderately low susceptibility rating.
Despite these ratings, all four GLWA water treatment plants using Detroit River source water have historically provided satisfactory treatment to meet drinking water standards. The treatment process begins with disinfecting the source water using chlorine to kill disease-causing organisms. Next, Alum is added to cause fine particles that cloud the water to clump together and settle – a process called coagulation and sedimentation. Fluoride is added to protect teeth from cavities and corrosion. The water then flows through sand filters to remove additional contaminants and chlorine-resistant microorganisms. A small amount of phosphoric acid helps control lead that might dissolve from home plumbing systems. Finally, chlorine is added again to keep the water disinfected as it travels through distribution mains.
The water undergoes extensive testing before, during, and after treatment. The Great Lakes Water Authority tests hundreds of samples weekly in certified laboratories. GLWA water meets all safety and health standards and ranks among the top 10 in the United States for quality and value.
Maintaining safe water is a shared responsibility. The water GLWA delivers to Hazel Park does not contain lead. Lead can enter drinking water through home plumbing fixtures and, in some cases, service lines. Orthophosphates added during treatment create a protective coating in pipes throughout the system, including in homes and businesses. Hazel Park performs required lead and copper sampling and testing in the community.
Water customers can take steps to limit lead exposure. If present, elevated lead levels can cause serious health problems, especially for pregnant women and young children. When your water has been sitting for several hours, minimize potential lead exposure by flushing your tap for 30 seconds to two minutes before using water for drinking or cooking.

Promise Zone Scholars may receive other merit-based scholarships, though Pell, TIP, or other government funding (excluding loans) will offset the Promise Zone Scholarship amount. Students must maintain full-time status and a minimum 2.0 GPA after beginning college to continue receiving their scholarship. Hazel Park's history begins in 1835 when the U.S. Government provided land to Shuabel Conant. Native Americans had previously used the land, as evidenced by artifacts still being discovered today. Conant and his heirs sold parcels to settlers including the Lacey, Grix, Benjamine, Neusius, Meinke, Grow, and Truba families. Many streets, schools, and parks bear the names of these pioneer families.
The name "Hazel Park" is attributed to Royal Oak Township Superintendent of Schools John Benjamine, who referenced the abundance of hazelnut trees native to the area, which thrived in the then-swampy soil conditions. The Hazel Park School District, originally called School District Number 8, was established in 1884 during meetings held at John Benjamine's brickyard, located on what later became the site of Hazel Park Junior High.
