We're pleased to present our Annual Water Quality Report for the Mt. Pleasant water system. Each year, we prepare this report for all residents to provide transparency about water quality. Our goal is to deliver safe, reliable municipal water to your home.

Some residents may have special health concerns regarding water quality. Individuals with compromised immune systems, including those undergoing chemotherapy, organ transplant recipients, people with HIV/AIDS, elderly residents, and infants may face higher risks from certain contaminants. These individuals should seek advice from healthcare providers regarding their water consumption. EPA/CDC guidelines on reducing infection risks from Cryptosporidium and other microbial contaminants are available through the Safe Drinking Water Hotline: 1-800-426-4791.

Our water source is groundwater under direct influence of surface water, drawn from six groundwater wells ranging from 120' to 465' deep, plus a Ranney™ horizontal collector well. These sources are located south and southwest of Mt. Pleasant, with the Ranney™ Collector situated adjacent to the Chippewa River. Water undergoes softening, filtration, and disinfection at our Treatment Plant before distribution.

The State completed a source water assessment in 2003 to determine contamination susceptibility. Our groundwater wells' susceptibility ranges from very low to moderate, while the Ranney™ Collector has high susceptibility. Although no specific contamination sources were identified, we've implemented a wellhead protection program as a precaution.

Our water department routinely monitors contaminants according to Federal and State regulations. Drinking water, including bottled water, naturally contains small amounts of some contaminants, which doesn't necessarily indicate a health risk. Water sources (both tap and bottled) include rivers, lakes, streams, ponds, reservoirs, springs, and wells. As water travels through the environment, it dissolves naturally-occurring minerals and can pick up substances from animal and human activity.

Potential contaminants in source water include:

• Microbial contaminants (viruses, protozoa, bacteria) from sewage plants, septic systems, agricultural operations, and wildlife
• Inorganic contaminants (salts, metals) from natural sources or urban runoff, industrial discharges, oil/gas production, mining, or farming
• Pesticides and herbicides from agriculture, urban runoff, and residential uses
• Organic chemicals from industrial processes, petroleum production, gas stations, urban runoff, and septic systems
• Radioactive contaminants from natural sources or from oil/gas production and mining

The EPA establishes regulations limiting contaminant levels in public water systems to ensure safety, while the FDA sets similar standards for bottled water. MCLs (Maximum Contaminant Levels) are very stringent—a person would need to drink 2 liters of water daily at the MCL for a lifetime to have a one-in-a-million chance of experiencing the described health effect.

We monitor the water supply regularly. If present, elevated lead levels can cause serious health problems, especially for pregnant women and young children. Lead typically comes from materials and components in service lines and home plumbing, not from the water source itself.
