About Us
The Illinois Environmental Protection Agency considers all community water sources potentially vulnerable to contamination, which necessitates treatment for all water supplies in Illinois. Standard treatment protocols include coagulation, sedimentation, filtration, and disinfection.
The Granite City Water Treatment Facility draws surface water from the Mississippi River. This source is influenced by agricultural, municipal, and industrial activities. Agricultural chemicals may show seasonal increases in the river. Rigorous monitoring and treatment ensure high-quality water service despite variations in source water quality.
Accidental spills of hazardous materials in navigable waterways remain a major concern due to their frequency in recent years. Illinois features 1,116 miles of inland waterways capable of supporting industrial barge traffic, including the Upper Mississippi River, Illinois River, and Ohio River. These waterways host numerous facilities that handle hazardous materials.
Analysis of reported incidents shows that between 1974 and 1989, 794 accidental spills of hazardous materials occurred along Illinois waterways, with approximately 92% happening along the Mississippi and/or Illinois Rivers. Spills in critical locations can reach water intakes within five hours or less, making contingency planning and prompt reporting essential for this watershed.
Information regarding Mississippi River spill response can be found at the U.S. EPA website www.epa.gov/region5/oil, with additional data available at the U.S. Geological Survey's FTP site.
The Illinois Environmental Protection Agency (IEPA) has completed a source water assessment for the Granite City system. A copy is available upon request by contacting Ian Rischmiller, Water Quality Supervisor, at ian.rischmiller@amwater.com or 309-208-0196.
The Granite City distribution system maintains an interconnection with Illinois American Water's East St. Louis (PWSID 1635040) distribution system, which routinely supplies water to Granite City.
