Source Water Information

Rainfall travels over or through the ground, dissolving naturally occurring minerals and collecting organic materials. This water eventually reaches rivers, lakes, streams, reservoirs, and wells that may become municipal water sources. Potential contaminants in source water include:

  • Microbial Contaminants from sewage, agricultural operations or wildlife
  • Inorganic Contaminants like naturally occurring salts and metals or from urban runoff, wastewater, oil/gas production
  • Pesticides and Herbicides from agriculture, urban runoff, and residential uses
  • Organic Chemical Contaminants from industrial processes, petroleum production, gas stations and septic systems
  • Radioactive Contaminants occurring naturally or from energy production activities

Our primary water sources include the Kentucky River (south of Lexington and through Owen County) and Jacobson Reservoir (Fayette County). Our three treatment facilities—Kentucky River Station, Richmond Street Station, and Kentucky River Station II at Hardin's Landing—can reliably produce up to 85 million gallons daily. Our treatment processes reduce contaminant concentrations well below health concern thresholds.
